Help with James BLOOD
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 19:35 BST (UK) »

I have the marriage certificate of James BLOOD to Esther Mary SHELLEY in 1873, his occupation was a soldier.   His father is shown as also James BLOOD, occ. tailor.  Have not been able to find a birth certificate for James, the marriage certificate says he was full age.

The 1881 census had a transcription error and showed his name as BENDON and as I cannot find a James BLOOD birth in Newton Abbot as per the census or a James BLOOD occupation tailor in that area I am guessing it was incorrect.

I have found a James BLOOD aged 21yrs in 1851 Census, occ. tailor in the Congleton Cheshire area.  I am wondering if this could be the father, dates seem to fit.  His year of birth abt 1830.  Tried looking for a marriage for him but cannot find anything.  Any suggestions please!!!

Hello

It will help Rootschatters to help you if you can provide whatever details you have on the family.

So: the 1881 census shows James BENDON (that's what it says on the schedule - not a later transcription error) in Stoke Damerel, Devon.  He's a 28 yr old soldier b Newton Abbot, as you say.

Others in the household are:

Esther M Wife 28 Blackheath Kent
George T Son 7 Hants Portsmouth (George T BLOOD Mar 1874 Portsmouth)
Charles H Son 3 Devon Newton Abbot
Esther M Daur 1 Devon Devonport (Esther Mary BLOOD Mar 1881 Stoke D.)

RG11/2209/127/50

Do you have them in any later census?

I have had a good look but can't find him anywhere.

Esther is on her own in 1891 but still says she's married.

RG12/520/10/15

Julia Cole 30  Wife Heathfield, Sussex
Frederick Cole 12  Son Lewisham, Kent

Beatrice L Cole 6  Daug Lewisham, Kent

Esther M Blood 35 mar Lodger, Lewisham, Kent - Laundry maid

Possible but birthplace is different?

possible for daughter Esther in 1891 as a pauper inmate in North Surrey District Schools in Penge RG12/600 folio 32 pg 4. Enumerated as aged 8 and born Lewisham, but there doesn't seem to be another one on FreeBmd that could account for her.

Also, the school had a link with the training ship Exmouth, home of Charles in 1891.

Records for both places appear to be at the LMA.

Does the marriage certificate say what regiment he was in?  The number might help to trace him and his records.
