Valentine Howell 1766 Westminster
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 21:35 UTC (UK) »

Hi

With the help of people on here last year I managed to down track my gx 3 grandfather William Henry Howell who gave his place of birth as Yarmouth and London. We believe he was born in Yarmouth in 6 Sept 1802 to Valentine Howell and Elizabeth Bennett. He was baptised the following day. They then moved (back?) to London and went on to have 3 more children and all were baptised in St Mary Marylebone, including William again.  I am fairly sure this is the same family as although his date of birth is given as 6 Sept 1808, the baptism took place in April 1808 Huh So we think the dob here has been transcribed incorrectly and should be 1802.

A contact has now sent me what he says is the birth of Valentine Howell - 19th Oct 1766 and baptised 6th Nov 1766, in Westminster, father Valentine Howell, mother Jane. He got this from Christening Records 1530 -1906. Has anyone got any ideas how I can find out if this is my Valentine Howell as I don't want just to accept it without proof?  Also if it is my Valentine any idea how I can find out the maiden name of Jane?

Thanks

From the baptism records of St James's Picadilly, Westminster. 1766

Hope this helps, I was probably the transciber if your contact found it in FreeReg.

Hi - rich pickings among PCC wills at the National Archives. Well worth getting these if you haven't already, I'd say:

Will of Valentine Howell of Watchhouse Marylebone Lane, 1829

Will of Valentine Howell of Saint James Westminster , Middlesex, 1769

Thanks Rob

I've seen the Westminster one, dont think it's mine but will check again. I'm not sure my Valentine would have left a will as they seem to have been very working class, he was a waiter in Yarmouth, if we have the correct family!!! Would people that "lowly" have written wills?

Not that unusual for the "lower" classes to leave PCC wills - and all the more likely if people owned property in more than one part of the country. The name is fairly unusual - I'd be surprised if there was no connection...

Hi again Rob

I've just checked and it was the Watchouse Will I had, but it's not very helpful as it is very short and he just left everything to his wife Elizabeth and left her as guardian to any minor children. Unfortunately he didn't name them.

So I'm still not certain if he is mine  Angry Angry

Valentine Howell, cook and confectioner, of Duke St (Marylebone) dissolving his partnership here in 1822: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/17816/pages/792 (halfway down first column).
