Hi Could anyone help me point my cousin in right direction please  . She is looking for info on Herbert James Ford,he was b 1875 and signed on in the 3rd Wiltshire Reg c 17 yrs old, then the Army Service Corps when he was 19yrs. His reg number 12301. He was also in the 11th,16th & 24th Co; He was transferred to the Army Reserves in 1907.You may think this is enough infobut,sheneeds to know where to look if there is anywhere, for a list of medals, she definitely knows he earned 2 medals but, rellies think ther was more. And how do you find which was awarded for what ?.

Its possible he had Boer War Service and then recalled to colours or was already still serving in The Great War.
Id suggest looking at ancestry service records,pension records and medal index cards if you can get access at a library...my subs has lapsed hoever there are a couple of possibilities also someone may be able to check Boer War medal rolls.

I agree with Annie you need to say where the information came from. Basically your dates do not stack up.
The 3rd Wiltshire were Militia, and you could enlist when you were 17, which is fine. However, if he became a Regular in 1894 he would have been transferred to the Army Reserve after 7 years, ie 1901; and discharged after 12 years as a Regular in 1906. In both cases the army may have exercised the right to keep him for an extra year if he was abroad.
He may have enlisted later in either the Class A or Class D Reserve. Or he may have rejoined the Militia (which became the Special Reserve) in 1908. This link may help - http://www.1914-1918.net/reserve.htm
Regarding his medals, if you have his service record, this will say on page 4 (near next of kin details) if he earned medals for the Boer War. If you do not have his papers you will have to visit Kew and look on the microfilms in WO100.
If you search the National Archives for WW1 medals you get no hits for 12301 and Ford, so either he was not in the ASC, or he had rejoined and been given a different number.

Regarding service papers, assuming there was a break in service before WW1 there could be a set in WO97 for discharges 1900-1913. While Militia/Special Reserve papers are in WO96. Findmypast will be putting both online by 2011.

Hi Ady, Annie & Ken
The info I posted was given to me by my cousin, I am unsure where she got the info, maybe her dad or other members of her more close family. I don't know if she has researched any on her own. Sorry I will ask the question. Thanks for the help so far, I am not good with dates of who joins what & when. I had a quick look on Ancestry & could not find him in the military section which is why I asked the question where next. Oh & I did wonder if he would have had more that one service number as ther were no hits on the national archives site either.
Will forward your answers to her & see what comes back.

Hi Everyone
The info regarding Grandad joining up in the first place at age 17 was from Dad then I found the following entry on a site called The Wardrobe - The Rifles / Berkshire + Wiltshire Museum:
Ford, Herbert James. Born at Warminster. Enlisted on 25 August 1893 aged 17yrs 10mths.
On his attestation form where he joined the Army Service Corp at age 19yrs and 9mths it says that he was already serving with the 3rd Wiltshire Regiment. He was in South Africa in the Boer War. His date of discharge was 5th July 1907.
I Have his service papers for the Army Service Corp. Haven't got any for 3rd Wiltshire but it's the medals I was curious about. His papers say he was entitled to the South African medals. I have info re Kings Sth Africa medal and South Africa medal and clasps but we think there were more.
Hope this answers where the info came from I have not looked on the mentioned site 'the wardrobe' so cannot comment on what it is like.

If he served overseas in WW1 then he will have campaign medals as well as QSA and KSA
They were sent out after 1919.

Hi Thank you all for your help, the info is always useful. My cousin has established that Herbert Ford was awarded two medals, no more so her military search on her Grandfather has reached conclusion. Thanks again on her behalf.
