Carnoustie Huttons
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 22:35 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

My Grt Grandfather David Samson Hutton once owned the Corner Hotel on Dundee Street in Carnoustie before emigrating to Canada. Its still a hotel and recently my son visited there and stayed in the hotel.  He married Barbara Duffas Wills in 1880. Her parents were George Wills and Eliza nee Bertie. His parents were John Hutton and Hellen nee Samson.

I am wondering if he had any siblings? I did some searches on Scotlandspeople but no luck. Thanks.

1861 census for Step Row Dundee -

John Hutton 26  b Dundee - Messenger
David 2  b Dundee
Isabella Grant 39  sister b Dundee
Alexander Grant 52  brother in law b Edinburgh
Liff and Benvie ED 26 Page 14 Line 10

It's possible John was a widower but you would have to view the full image on SP to find out

Thanks. I will try to pull up the images for those. So possibly an older sister? I know by the time he married in 1880 both his parents were deceased.

I suspect Georgina may have died pre-1861 as she is not on the 1861 census

Yes, I found that Georgina and her mother Helen Samson nee Banks both died in 1859. From what you posted on the census John and his son David may have then moved in with his sister Isabella and her husband Alexander Grant. Where do you find that information? I called up the census in ScotlandsPeople and it doesnt have that, it is sketchy but looks like widower recorded there though.

Ancestry have the transcriptions for all Scottish censuses from 1841-1901 but do not have the original images

John appears to have re-married between 1861-1871

David's age is clearly mis-transcribed

1871 census for 23 Strawberry Bank Dundee - all b Dundee except Annie

John Hutton 36  auctioneer
Annie  34  b Coupar Angus
David  42 son
John   8  (John Allan
George   7  (George Ogilvy)
Frederick   4  (Frederick Louis)
Isabella 2  (Isabella Josephine)
Agnes Rodger 19  servant
Dundee ED 5 Page  23 Line 8

 from the IGI

JOHN HUTTON    Spouse:  ANNE ALLAN
Marriage:  03 DEC 1861   Eassie And Nevay, Angus

If you lookup the above children on the IGI you will find mother was Annie Allan

Wow what a difference 10 years can make! Thanks, I had given up on siblings for David and was trying to dig up cousins. Then got myself into an even more confusing mess looking for Barbara Wills (actually Will) siblings.  Interesting, in all my looking this is the first time I have seen Frederick which is my fathers name. Surely my Grandmother b 1882 would have known him (half-uncle). I wont be able to work on this again for a few days thanks again for your help Smiley

I had a look on ScotlandPeople for Frederick since thats my fathers name but actually I would like to find any decendants of Annie and John's children.

1881 census spelling Fredick looks like they are living with Annie's parents now...
Top of page so I dont know who is above in list
Alexander Allan, son, unmarried, age is sketchy 33?
Mary, daughter, unmarried, 28
Annie Hutton, widow, 44
John, grandson, 18
George, grandson, 17
Fredick, grandson, 4
no Isobella

1891 census now in Gorbals, Glasgow as Fred
Annie 56
George 27
Fred 24

1901 census in Inverallan /Moray
Fred L. Hutton, boarder, 33

Do you know where Inverallam /Moray is?

Inverallan is where you're after, you should find plenty about the area if you google it.

Thank you DD, I have since discovered that Fred Hutton emigrated to Canada (followed his half brother David) enlisted in WW1 and was killed in action. John and George may have met the same fate, not sure yet. Not sure what happened to Isobella either, between 1871 census and 1881 I cant find a death for her.

Thank you! I had a hard time believing a 47 yr old signing up for WW1. So this Frederick was my Father's cousin.

I have found a Frederick Hutton in 1911 Canada census who might be my fathers half uncle.
Living in Edmonton born June 1867 in Scotland...
Frederick Hutton 44
Grace Hutton 29
George Hutton 9
John Hutton 7
Kathelle Hutton 4
