Families of Downton, Wiltshire

Hi

My mothers father line (as far as I have traced it so far) started in Downton, Wilts and in the course of my doing the tree I have come across many many helpful people who also 'start' in Downton. I am considering a new tree on Ancestry for Downton Families .

Anyone interested?

                Some of my family were briefly in Downton, but the missing 1841 census doesn't help me to see if there is more. I would willingly contribute what I have. Great idea. Toby,

Hi Sandra,
                 Very surprised at your reply. I don't understand how a census can be recreated.
        I am interested in a John Foss born Litton Cheney, Dorset and  aged 33 in 1841. He was a dairyman in the 1851, 61 & 71 censuses. I would expect to find a wife, Emma and perhaps 3 children , the third being born in Downton.
     Shall be most interested to hear what you find. Many thanks, Toby.

Toby - You can find your Foss family on the 1841 census on FREECEN. All of the Wiltshire 1841 census is on there.

There are 4 children - the last 2 born in Wiltshire.

Thanks Kanskar. I am learning a lot today. Sounds like there will be a new name of a child that died very young. I shall have to redo my Downton search. At the old Family Reserch Centre at Myddleton Road, the Downton section of the 1841 census was stated to be missing. Very good news, Toby.

                  I knew that there were Foss innkeepers in Dorset but have never found a connection with my Foss'. T shall have to wait until I have seen the actual 1841 entry before making any further commment. FREECEN doesn't mean anything to me.

I've got Curtis/Curtice back to 1704 in Downton - in fact, they seemed to have moved back and forth frequently between Downton and Whiteparish.  Am missing a couple of marriages in my direct line but Hebbard also features.

In connection with
http://www.freecen.org.uk  in 1841
and John Foss inn keeper aged 33,
being unfamiliar with the geography and boundaries  of South Wilts., I am confused about whether he was living in Downton or Standlynch. Can anyone put me straight?

I looked at teh census which suggested to me that Standlynch was a parish of Downton, like Redlynch and White PArish so I google mapped it and this is the link

Hope it works, it shows the village of Downton with Standlynch off to the north

Hi again

For some reasonthe link only shows Standlync, once theree click get directions, enter Downton and ther you go. By playing about with the zoom you can get street names, some of which will be familiar like The Borough and The Village.

Thanks for your effort but I am being thick or something. When I get to the head of the family before I select "Show Household", the only option offerred to me is "new query" or "revise query". I cannot find "get directions" anywhere.
