Hi Philip and welcome to rootschat
Have you looked at Surnames Board to see who else may be researching the Woodhalls? Go to the top of this page, 4th button from left. Enter your Surnames there also- that maximizes your possible contacts.
You could get the exact year of yout grandfather's birth by looking for him in freebmd.
Good luck
charlotte

Hi Philip
Welcome to Rootschat, great site.
The only David Woodhall on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/districts.pl?r=83006958&d=bmd_1245313478 is
for Dudley is
Births Jun Quarter 1890 Woodhall David Dudley 6c 48
But there are a few Woodall's including the following and which seems possible.
Births Dec Quarter 1883 WOODALL David Dudley 6c 113
Which is about the year you stated

Hi Philip
Having looked on the 1891 &1901 Censuses, there are several possibilities.
So, if you have your father's birth certificate, what was his mother's maiden name?
You can then find his parent's marriage certificate and buy that one rather than spend money on a birth certificate that may not be your David. That should give you their father's names an occupations.
You can order online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ and they cost £7 each in the UK.
If Joseph or any of his siblings were born after 1912 ish on freebmd search it should give you the mother's maiden name anyway.
