Thomas Wilson
« on: Monday 29 June 09 04:34 UTC (UK) »

Thomas Wilson aged 18 joined the 65th Regiment [2nd North Yorkshire Regiment] at Ely ABT 1844
Regimental No.2496.
Wish to know who his parents were, as much about him as possible. I will be most grateful for
any information regarding Thomas.

That's not a lot to go on for a common name like Thomas Wilson! What else do you know about him? Have you found him in censuses which will give his place of birth, as Ely may not have been his birthplace? There are 242 Thomas Wilsons born 1826 +/- 2 in the 1851 census, none of them with a birthplace Ely, although 5 of them were born in Cambs. In 1841 there are 10 Thomas Wilsons living in Cambs born 1826 +/-2, none of them in Ely.

Without more information there's not much chance.

What was his wife's name, who were his kids? Where did he marry - the marriage cert will give his father's name

In other words, "as much about him as possible"

Do you have his service record from TNA?

Hullo Joy,

BB's point about getting his service record seems to me a key point and how I'd approach this were I you.

Thomas Wilson is , unfortunately, a common name.  I have one in my tree and have come to a halt there- too many to work out which is mine.

So have a look at TNA stuff.
Good luck,

Cambs FHS burial index has an infant Thomas Wilson buried at Ely St Mary amended Holy Trinity in 1827, so I think that cuts out the first one.

Looking at the very long thread on the NZ board there seems to have been a hint that Thomas was from Scotland. Or has that line of thought been discounted?

Hi,
There was a Thomas Wilson, infant buried 25 Nov 1827 in Ely Holy Trinity but none buried in Ely St Mary. Unfortunately it doesn't give the names of the parents.

Sorry, misread the entry - the previous Thomas Wilson in 1826 age 24 was at St Mary. The infant Thomas was at Holy Trinity. I've amended my original post

Hello BB & Tempsford,

Thank you for your replies.

First of all, I was hoping that there would be records somewhere regarding men who enlisted in the Yorkshire regiment and that there would be names of the next of kin'.

There is a great team of Chatters in NZ who have been trying to help, with so many Wilson's it is very difficult.

We did think Thomas came from Scotland until another researcher found information regarding the Regiments.

On the birth and death certificate of John Wilson, his fathers occupation was a soldier.John was born 1863 time of the
Maori land wars.

Thomas embarked on the ship the Java on 6th Jan 1845
at Woolwich,England.
They disembarked in NZ.
In 1865 the regiment went back to England but Thomas transferred to the 12th regiment and was discharged
24 April 1866.

Thomas Wilson bap 31 May 1827 looks hopeful but oh!! more Thomas and Mary's.
It has been suggest that I look at TNT  what that does it mean?

TNA - The National Archives at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

With the precise details you've got about his military service it looks to me as though someone already has a copy of his service record, although there's no mention of his age, which you would expect to find, nor a place of residence/birth. Where did the information about his regimental life come from?

I think it was the 1827 Thomas who died as an infant and was buried later that year.

If he left for NZ in 1845 you only have one chance with censuses - 1841, which is the least useful of them all as it doesn't give birthplaces. I believe the minimum age to enlist as a full soldier, as opposed to a boy soldier, was 17, which puts his birth at 1828 or earlier. There are three Thomas Wilsons age 16-19 living in Cambs in 1841, and three aged 12, but none born 1827/8.

It seems as though he was probably married in NZ - have you pursued a marriage there?

The information about the regimental life came from a book called

Discharged in New Zealand by Hugh and Lynne Hughes.
Thomas married in NZ in 1859 waiting on marriage cert.
