George James Ellse
« on: Monday 29 June 09 07:21 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find out more of the life of George James Ellse born 1870 in Chesterfield eldest son of George William Ellse and Lydia Ann (nee Martin).  George joined the police (Derbyshire Constabulary). He  was in Hathersage at the time of the 1901 census.
I am particularly interested in the time he was stationed in Wirksworth.  I know he moved to Buxton at some time and became a police inspector.
He was married to Louisa Jackson of Belper and had one daughter Mabel born around 1896 in Draycott.
I would much appreciate filling in some parts of his working life with the police.
Many thanks,
marp

Yes, this is my posting on the Wirksworth site.  As you can see I know something of George Ellse, but there are large gaps.   I am really after information regarding hgis various postings with the police in Derbyshire and in particular in Wirksworth.

Thanks,  marp

Hi re George James Ellse & George W Else.

I am compiling a list of Police officers that served in the 4 forces in Derbyshire.

A number of service records are held in a couple of Descriptive record books held at the Derbyshire Records Office, Matlock. These books hold brief information about the officers service, good and bad conduct records and previous occupations.

From my list I can tell you:

D3376 OS 5/5  1857 - 1914 Page 234. George W

D3376 OS Box 23 Vol 2 1879 - 1930 Page 43 Surname spelt Ellse, middle name corrected from William to James.

George William / George James born 15/01/1870 joined the Derbyshire Constabulary aged 21yrs 16/04/1891 as Pc 76 and retired as an Inspector on 30/06/1921. He was promoted to Sergeant (No. 54 or 34) 01/09/1903. Promoted to Inspector on 01/05/1915.

Was Superintendent & Head Constable of Chesterfield John Pernell Else 1876 - 1882,
Derbyshire Constabulary Supt Walter Maryn Else 1904-38 or
Pc Jas. Pickard Else 1873 - 1876 a relative?

I'm always looking for any photos of Derbyshire Police officers, should you have any of George.

I hope this is of help in your research

Hi,

Thanks for this.  Most interesting.   George James is the man I am looking for.  Date of birth is correct.   By the way his father was George William Ellse which might account for the error.  His father was not in the police, he was a plasterer/builder.
As far as I know he was not related to the other police named Else.
This branch of the family were very particular about the spelling of Ellse with the double 'l'.

if any one can tell me when George James Ellse served in Wirksworth please let me know.

Thanks again,  marp
