Hi Rc's Always fascinated by unusual surnames, so here's one Esther Entonai (Mrs) married Thomas Brown 1877 It appears in waikouaiti parish register, which is the area we are looking for possible Brown, and Glendinning family http://www.archives.presbyterian.org.nz/marriageregisters/waikouaitimarraiges1.htm
I've searched all the CD's I have and this name only appears the once for marriage, there are a handful of ENTON's but they are a terrible search as papers past picks ups choices like Fenton and Brenton
Anyone heard of this surname before??? Bye Althea

Hi Althea
... a right "curly" one !
What I do when faced with "odd / unusal" names, is run them through the search engine at "familysearch" (selecting "all countries").
A search for "Entonai" though, only comes back with birth in Mexico - 1624 ... where the spelling is "Entoni".
But just looking at the parish register link, I notice there is an "x" alongside of the name of Esther ? "X" = 'her mark" ... so obviously she was not able to write her name.
Also ... same link ... there is a marriage in 1884 for "Hira ANTONI - 21 years" (to TEWAHIA) ... a relative perhaps ? "ENTONAI" ... "ANTONI"
Lu

Hmmm .. the "Hira ANTONI" - Tamati TEWAHIA 1884 marriage, shows up as surname ... "ANATONI".
Check out 'familysearch' (NZ) ... birth for "Esther ANTHONY or ANTONIA" - 1850 - Stewart Island ?
