23 rd Regiment, 1851
« on: Monday 29 June 09 08:29 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I am looking for some advice on a recent census finding. In 1851 Martin Casey, born Ireland, was a private in the 23 Regiment Guards, but a patient in a military hospital in Devonport. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find more about Martin's service, what happened to him, and who he was fighting.

Can anyone assist

Ian

Can you clarify '23rd Regiment Guards'?  Is that the exact wording on the census or other source?  If so they may have got it wrong!
The Guards regiments (Grenadier, Coldstream etc) did not have as many battalions as 23.  23rd Regiment of Foot later became Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
More clues would help.

Hi Ian

It says 23rd Regiment Army. So he was in the 23rd Regiment of Foot, or 23rd Regiment, or 23rd Foot. They were line infantry rather than guards. Even in 1851 they had the nominal title of Royal Welsh Fusiliers, although they would have picked up recruits as they travelled around the British Isles. Here is a link to researching the military - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm

Records are stored according to date of discharge. His will be on microfilm in Kew (if they survive). If his papers have not survived you can follow his service using the Muster Books and Pay Lists (WO12). These will tell you where his was on the first of each month. His first and/or last entry may tell you where he was born, and his trade. If not you can see where the Sergeants were out recruiting.

The army did not record details of wives and children until the 1870s (ish), if you are after that kind of information.

The 23rd Foot fought in the Crimea War, so if you get no joy on this thread, I would start another thread requesting a medal roll lookup for him.

Ken
