Clarify date please
« on: Monday 29 June 09 09:46 UTC (UK) »

Hello, my family had this photo dated as taken late 1860s to 1870's.

This was before we knew about the stamp dating on the back.   I looked this one up and it says they used this stamp from 1918 to 1938.

Not sure which date is correct.

Many thanks

Steven

I must admit that it doesn't look 1900s but I suppose he could be in some old fashioned livery, but the pose and setting still seem wrong.

It could be a 1900s reprint on modern (for the time) paper.

Without the stamp dating being known I would have said that this was an image printed after 1902 as it has a divided back to it. Dating photograph's of men is always difficult but when it comes to giving a date to those in their working attire it can be even harder. This shows someone who was employed as a coachman / groom and he would be in the livery of the household of whom he was employed by and it does not give many clues as to the date period that it was taken. If, as you say, this was a photograph taken at an earlier period it may well be a reprint which has been published on the postcard format. I would however have doubts on this being an 1860's to 1870's image.

This has been scanned in black & white, but is it actually a b&w photo? Or sepia? That would be a clue.

Cheers,

Sorry photoshop automatically changed it to black and white for some reason, here is what it looked liked originally.

Hmmm, well, earlier rather than later, but as OR says it could be a reprint.

What is it he has his hand on? Looks like a light-coloured uniform with a double row of buttons..........

Opinion is that it is an overcoat, very faint even on original

Coat on the chair looks a bit like the dust coat that early chauffeurs wore, which I think they inherited from coachmen.

I would say that the quality of the image (faded highlights, pose, etc) dates it to 1860s/70, but that it has been reprinted onto a postcard at a later date.  The colour of the reprint is interesting, and indicates that it is a silver gelatine printing-out paper, which was used in the 1910s and 20s for commercial prints like postcards (we usually see the true black and white of silver gelatine developing-out papers in the postcards posted on this board  Smiley  )

Cheers

Thanks very much for all the considered replies,  I had similar comments to the photo on my profile to the left, which was that it might be a re-print of an earlier photo as the card wasn't so old!

Am wondering whether both are copies for some reason and handed down by that part of the family from Pembroke Dock.

I'll not mark it 'completed' for now.

Thanks very much

Success I think,

I found out who it might be.   The brother of my 2nd great grandmother - he's the only likely one it could be.   On the 1881 census he is down as Ostler aged 17 (1864) , so my guess is he fits.

Trouble with that part of my tree is their name was O'Shea and the different versions they spell it make it impossible to trace them all as their surname have been spelt, Shea, Sheers, Shai, Shay, to name a few.
