THORN family - Newton/Plymouth in Devon
« on: Monday 29 June 09 09:49 UTC (UK) »

Good morning
Does anyone have any connection with the Thorn/e family origianlly from Newton and then Plymouth?
Like William Thorn born about 1807 in Newton who married in Stoke Danerel to Sarah and had at least 8 children in East Stonehouse and then married again.  He was a Greenwich Pensioner too - would anyone know if I can find out information on him being a Greenwich Pensioner - is it similar to a Chelsea Pensioner?
Many thanks

Hello
Just as the Chelsea Hospital was instituted for soldiers who had grown old or were injured in the service of the crown, Greenwich hospital was built for seamen 1695.
Seamen contributed sixpence per month from their pay to wards the upkeep of the hospital.
Pensioners were admitted from 1705 and wore a dark gray uniform with blue lining and brass buttons. Families of the pensioners were not allowed to live with them in the hospital, so many lived in the Greenwich area.
The hospital closed in 1869. Records of the Greenwich pensioners are kept at the National archives.

Hi Pam and Gadget
Thanks for your replies and information.

The guy I am looking at seems to have lived at home still in Devon as a Greenwich Pensioner - is that unusual?

Kind regards

PS  Hi Gadget - just had a look at the site you mentioned, doesn't look as if he's there does it.  But thank.

Hi Cranstone,

My Thorne's are not from Newton or Plymouth.  However if you link back to the Exmoor area [Devon/Somerset] then please get in touch as you may link to my Thorne's.

Cheers
