The Cull's of Pitmore Pond
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 23:39 UTC (UK) »

James Cull (Born 1778) married Mary West, daughter of James West and Anna Maria Pew.  They had 8 children.

I am looking for information on the ancestors of James Cull.  His grandson, George Cull, moved to Newfoundland.

Hi Geo103

Welcome to Rootschat... I am sure that someone here will be able to help you out with your search.

Have you tried the IGI ( International Genealogical Index ) on familysearch.org  ??  There are some children listed for this couple there, but they are submitted entries and should be treated with caution and used as a guide until you can have the original church/parish registers checked.

I can check for these children on the Census for you if you do not have access yourself.

Cheers

I have this information.  Unfortunately it does not identify James' parents.  I have a suspicion that his father may have also been James but I have not been able to find an confirming information.  I did have contact with a relative of James who lived in England at that time and she advised that she had identified two James Cull who had sons named James that were in the right time frame within the 1700's but could not distinguish which one was "my" family.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

son of Joseph & Mary baptised 30 July 1780
son of James & Ann 10 September 1780

Wills might help sort out these James.

There are some CULL wills on the Hampshire CALM database

I have checked the wills information and am no closer to resolving the parentage of James Cull b. 1778.  Thank you very much for your assistance.

Based on the date of birth it would appear that the parents may be either son of Joseph & Mary baptised 30 July 1780 or son of James & Ann baptised 10 September 1780.

It's a shame that you you find anything useful in the wills.  Sad

Naming patterns might help.  Did James & Mary call any of their children Joseph or Ann?
With close-knit families brothers and cousins can all name their children with the same family names and it gets very confusing. Undecided

I wonder if these James CULL burials at Minstead might help:

28 Nov  1795 aged 19

16 Jan  1805  aged 44

1 Dec  1829  aged 38

If there are gravestones, the inscriptions may give name of parents or wife.  Huh

I have now checked the naming patterns and about all I can conclude is that names from Matthew, James & Joseph families were all used in the immediate generations of James Cull (1778) -

James Cull & Mary West named 3 of their 8 children - James, Sarah, and Mary Anne.  Sarah may be after the wife of Matthew, Mary Anne could be a combination of the mother's name and wife of Joseph.

James married Sarah and named his children - George, Joseph and Stephen (died at 9).  George married Amelia and used the names James, Mary Jane and Sarah for 3 of his 8 children.  Joseph married Sarah and had 2 girls, one of which was named Sarah.

Sarah of James & Mary married George and named her only child Mary.

Quite a riddle.
