hello Pat

What was the name of the person you're interested in? I have a number of books here at home so I'll have a look to see what I can find.

Thank you Jayson & woody

John Burton has written the following. I would be most interested Jayson if you can confirm the story about  Robert Thursfield

It is entirely possible that one Robert Thursfield, a Yeoman and Seargeant at Arms at Beeston Castle in Cheshire, was executed by hanging during The English Civil War, after The Battle of Namptwiche (Nantwich) in about 1645. It is said that he handed over the Keys to The Castle of Beeston to the Parliamentarians whilst the castle was under seige by them, and whilst its occupants were being starved into submission. The Royalists later learned about the incident and treated it as a treasonable act, despite the fact that the occupants were being starved to death.

I've had a look at a couple of books (one of which was James Hall's History of the Town and Parish of Nantwich, which has quite an extensive chapter on the Civil War) but couldn't find his name listed in the names index.

Will keep looking!

Thank you Jayson

I can't find anything online about it apart from the piece that was written. The Civil War is quite well documented.

Hi everyone

I have emailed the author of the original piece about Robert Thursfield to see where he obtained the information from.

After contacting a Civil War Site I was given some hope. It is possible Robert Thursfield might have been one of the twenty that laid down their arms in 1645 and that the execution had more to do with desertion in the face of the enemy rather than  handing over the Keys to The Castle of Beeston.

I am now thinking it might even be the author's family folk lore as I can't find anything else out about Robert Thursfield

Hi

I have found a reference to a Civil War traitor buried in Nantwich on the following site

Have started a new topic asking about details.
