Wow, you are right I am definately ecstatic  Grin

Thank you JJ, Susan, Lynwen and  Linda I really appreciate your efforts and am very grateful for all you have found me.

JJ - thanks for all the leads / links and the directory's, I will continue to search these today.

Susano - Thank you for the census details, I only knew about George as he had registered his fathers death, though my mother had recollections of a daughter returning to Cambridgeshire when she was a child. At least I now have a name to look for ie Irene on passenger lists and see who else came with her.

Lynwen - Thank you for the obituary details, I will PM you

Linda - Thank you for the offer to find out more on Leonard for me.

It's a good job the weather is so bad over here today as I will have to stay in and concentrate on looking at what I now have on George/Ebenezer

Hi JJ

Just to let you know that I am trawling the directories - think I have him in 1923 p506
a janitor at Riverside School which would tie in with his previous occupation, living
h523 7A St N E    so thank you for pointing me in this direction

Rosie

added  I have now found George the elder on trade directories in Calgary until 1935, after that I am not sure whether it is him or his son George Edward living at H2239  20th Ave West. I never expected to get this far.  Grin

Hi

Well, I have just found a ship returning from Southampton to Quebec in 1953  (I have previously looked at this but couldn't prove a link) but on it is Gertrude Marshall age 61, Irene Hetherington 41 and Margaret Hetherington age 6. Unfortunately not much information other than this.

My mothers recollection of this family in England is probably around the mid 1930's so not this trip!

Fabulous...We have some great people working in the Canada board.... Smiley I like it when we work together like this to help bring out the whole rounded- out picture....( insert high five icon here...hehe)
I forgot to mention, but you probably found this yourself, that searching out the street numbers to do a reverse lookup of who owns or rents the residence is also available at the beginning of the directories...
You can also look to see when they started showing up in the directories...
Did you look at the Gertrude c.1884 coming in 1932 from Southampton to Quebec...but don't see anything for a George...( Can't view like you can) Grin

Hi JJ

You certainly do have some great people on the Canada board  Grin

I hadn't thought about doing an address search on the directories, thanks for suggesting it.

Yes, I have got the other trip for Gertrude in 1932, she is travelling alone. My mother recalled that there was a child visiting Cambridge from Canada around the 1930's but couldn't remember her name, regrettably I can no longer discuss this with my mother as she has dementia. Unfortunately I only have access to shipping records from Southampton to Quebec and not the other way round so I will have to do a look up for those.
At least now I know that the death record I originally asked for Gertrude in 1945 is not my Gertrude as she was sailing from England in 1953. Huh

Hello Lynwen & Rosie

As he was a retired federal civil servant, I suspect V.I.C. denotes a federal government department/body. I will see what I can find in the library next week.

Linda

Hi Linda

On the street directorys he appears as a cleaner Public Buildings  Roll Eyes

Cheesy An important job, nonetheless...someone has to do it...and it would not have been an easy job... Tongue

Yes, the address input can be just as important as the surname, if not moreso, as people can be mistranscribed, but often you can still spot them at the same address to help keep your bearings straight. A big plus if looking for Smiths or Thomsons.
I imagine Gertrude would have been near her daughter, Irene...so I have checked in Sask. but nothing on online databases thus far, but more is added all the time...
