Hi there,

I have a very old, fragile copy of the Diary of the Ninth (9th) Lancers in South Africa 1899 - 1902.

Diary of the 9th (Q.R.) Lancers
During The
South African Campaign,
1899 to 1902

BT.-Lieut.-Colonel F.F. Colvin
and
Captain E.R. Gordon

Cecil Roy
4, Bank Buildings, Gloucester Road, South Kensington
1904

It contains:
a Casualty List & those who Died of Disease,
list of Officers who served with the Regiment during the Campaign,
a list of those Mentioned in Despatches,
Record of Service,
Honours and Promotions for Officers, N.C.O.'s & Men.

Hi David,
I've got a couple of interesting excerpts for you! However, in email there isn't a facility to upload images. What I'll do is to post this on the message board too, and attach 2 jpg's showing the original entry's.

There is a diary entry for the 28th of April 1900 and Pte. W. Ferguson is listed as missing. It reads:

"The Regiment's casualties were:-
...Missing: ...
Pte. W. Ferguson ("D")...
Several of these men were stretcher-bearers helping the wounded, but the Boers detained them as prisoners".

I have a tiny scan of "D" Squadron, which I'll post in a separate message.

There is a listing for your man again, promoted and now with "C" Squadron. The top of the list reads:
"Date; Place; Blank (for Wounded etc); Rank; name; Squadron."
The entry reads:
"28/06/01, Spytfontein, Wounded, L. Corp W. Ferguson, C

There is no diary date for the 28th June 1901. The last record prior to this about "C" squadron on Friday 14th June, reads:

"The "C" Squadron was sent out at midnight to work round the right, via Vlakfontein..."
