I have been researching my maternal ancestors since they arrived in Cambusnethan from Ireland in the 1880s and have more or less finished but before I embark on the near impossible task of tracing their Irish roots, I need to find the death of the illusive John McG(h)ee. He was born to Thomas McGee and Mary Colvin, the middle of three children. His parents died when he was about three years of age and he went to live with his maternal grandmother. I have him on the 1901 census but can find no trace of him after that date. Has anyone any ideas?
Also, his grandparents had six children born 1854, 1855, 1857, 1858, 1867 and 1870. There is a big gap between the first four and the last two. Does anyone know how I can find out if there were children born between 1958 and 1967, who perhaps died in infancy?

John McGee was born in 1986, the middle child of Thomas McGee and Mary Colvin. He had a brother Thomas (1884-1955) and a sister, Mary (1888-1953). His father died in 1889 and his mother in 1890. His grandparents were John Colvin(1827-1885) and Catherine O'Neill (1833-1911).

Hi Colvin and Gadget 
Colvin, I think the reason you are not finding births for some of the children to the grandparents John and Catherine is probably down to the spelling variations on the surname. From IGI, these looks like a few more:
1. ELIZABETH COLLOVIN Birth: 11 FEB 1862 Carluke
2. HENRY COLOVIN Birth: 28 JAN 1863 Carluke
3. HENRY COLOVINBirth: 03 JUL 1864 Carluke

Both surnames are open to variations of spelling.
Here's what I found in the Cambusnethan cemetery burial records.
Four entries from the Day Book of internments.
JAMES COLVIN, aged 11 years, abode Overtown.
Parents - John Colvin and Catherine O'Neil.
Interred in public ground (pauper's burial) 18th Feb 1868.
THOMAS MCGHIE, coal miner, aged 37 years, Wishaw, married,
Parents - Thomas McGhie and Ann Currie.
Interred Section C plot 465, 12th Nov 1889.
MARY MCGHIE, housewife, aged 32 years, Wishaw, married.
Parents - John Colvin and Catherine O'Neil.
Interred Section C plot 465, 14th Oct 1890.
TERENCE COLVIN, railway signalman, aged 40 years, Wishaw, married.
Parents - John Colvin and Catherine O'Neil.
Interred Section C plot 520, 22nd March 1895.
If you contact North Lanarkshire Council Cemeteries office at Bellshill they should be able to tell you who else is buried in those two lairs. Just google North Lanarkshire Council for the address.

Thanks Monica and Lodger for your replies. I have exhausted all areas in Scotland for John McGee and have even tried England through Ancestry. I have not, however, tried military sites so perhaps that is the way to go or maybe he emigrated to the USA or Australia. I have only his birth details, no marriage or death could be found.
The Cambusnethan burials I know of as my grandfather held lair certificate purchased by Terence. His sister, his first wife and Terence (my g grandfather) are in one lair. James Colvin died of typhus fever aged 11 and, unfortunately, is in a pauper's grave. Thomas (John's father) was found dead in the street of natural causes and his wife,Mary,died nine months later of obstruction of the bowel.leaving three little mites without parents.
I will look into the names given by you, Monica, and see if they are related in any way.

Have been able to confirm that the names submitted by Monica are indeed the missing children and have followed up Gadget's suggestion re military service. Haven't come up with anything there yet so maybe he did, in fact, emigrate.

I don't think that that one is him as he seems to have a mother, Elizabeth, aged 36, and 4 other siblings - William, Thomas, Jane and Elizabeth.
There are a few others of the right age and leaving Glasgow or Liverpool for Canada or USA. It's difficult to tell whether any are him.

Thanks for checking, Gadget. As you say, it's not him. I think maybe, if he did emigrate, he would have gone to the USA as the Irish seemed to think of America as the 'promised land'. Why do the illusive ones always have common names!!

asking for a look up in the 1920/30 census or any Social Security info, just in case he did go to the States.
