I'm looking for Thomas Upton Fogden (or Thomas Fogden Upton) b 1808 Oving, in the 1851 census
He died in 1852 in Westhampnett RD so he must be in the Chichester area.
Any help appreciated
regards Sarah

Hi Sarah, noticed you have not had any luck. Was Thomas married? I have the 1841 and have had a quick look through the outskirts of Chichester but as yet have only come up with the following
HO107/1100 RUMBOLDS WHYKE ED 1 YORK STREET
THOMAS FOGDEN 50 AG LAB MARY 50 MARY 20 CLAY? MAKER ELIZABETH 15 THOMAS 13
Any idea where your Thomas was born or married? Best Wishes
Diane

Hi Diane
Thanks for your reply
I think Thomas Upton Fogden marries a Sarah Harris in 1833 in Portsea - at least that is the only IGI reference I can find for this unusual name
My ancestors are the Aylwards based around Hunston, Birdham, Donnington. In various years they leave money/property in wills to Thomas Upton Fogden, William Overington Fogden (I have him in the censuses now thanks to a rootschat reply) and George Upton Field. The Uptons and Fogdens must be inter-related and be taking maiden names as middle names
I'm guessing they must be related somehow to my Aylwards since they are in the wills but didn't know where to start so I thought if I found them in census it would give me family names and I could see if they married into my family.
Any advice welcome!
Thanks Sarah

Hi Sarah, have gone through Chichester page by page and found 17 Fogdens. Many pages are unreadable also in surrounding areas, and some are completely blank. Have not found any more with the name Thomas yet. Will keep looking.

Hi Sarah, sorry but that is the only Thomas I could find. Here are a few of the other Fogdens found 1841. HO107/1100 WALNUT TREE INN, MUNDHAM JOSEPH 35 JANE 35 JOHN 10 JANE 8 ELEANOR 6 HENRY 5 JOSEPH 2 CAROLINE 6 MONTHS
HO107/1103 EARNLEY FRANCIS FOGDEN 40 FARMER AGNES 35 FANNY 12
HO107/1100 DONNINGTON GEORGE FOGDEN 55 TAILOR MARY 50 NOT BORN SUSSEX ELIZABETH 20 CAROLINE 20 WILLIAM 12 CATHERINE 11 EMMA 8
HO107/1099 PAGHAM ROSE GREEN HENRY FOGDEN 30 ANN 25 FRANCES 11 HENRY 10 EDMUND 8 GEORGE 7 MARY 5 CAROLINE 3 BOY 1
HO107/1119 CHICHESTER FRANKLIN PLACE GEORGE 30 AG LAB MARY 40 SARAH 13 EMMA 11 ----------? ALFRED ? MALE 5 CHARLES 3
Just a few.Im sorry I could'nt find him for you . I don't think the 1851 is available for this part of Sussex. Maybe a few Parish Register requests may fill in the blanks or maybe someone else is researching the same famillies and can give you the info you need. All the best with that search.

hi
i'm so pleased i found this post!
although i cant shed any light on the this person....yet.. if you do find a link between these two families anywhere please contact me as i have details...recently adding into tree actually...of FOGDEN's AND OVERINGTON's in sussex although mainly they are in surrey. For me these are linked into my tree through the HEDGER/COULTON/MORRISS line
if you could please let me know the folio number and page number of census records then we can check for links.
any details of these names found in this area is of great interest to me.
Thankyou

Hi Sarah I am in possession of a number of original Indenture Documents (among others items) regarding Thomas Fogden (Elder and Junior) of Oving circa 1830. I will be selling them - but maybe you may wish to cast your eye over them before I do.
Regards Terry Driscoll
