Looking for some info WATSON Family
« on: Monday 29 June 09 17:22 UTC (UK) »

I have a Thomas Watson born, we believe, 1812 in North Ferriby, Yorkshire, with father named John and mother named Ruth Crathorne.

Am I looking to search in the correct area of Yorkshire?

Thank you for your assistance.

Yes.  You are on the right board.  North Ferriby is just outside Hull and on the north bank of the Humber.   BMDs will be registered in Sculcoates after 1837.  Prior to that you will need the church registers and North Ferriby is covered on the IGI at www.familysearch.org so if he was baptised there you should be able to find him.   Did you get his place of birth from census records?   If you can quote those it makes it easier to make sure we are on the right family.

The birth date and place are from the family itself. He immigrated to the U.S. prior to 1850. I have no UK census.

The info I have:
Thomas Watson b. 9 May 1812, North Ferriby, Yorkshire, England
Father: John
Mother: Mary Crathorne
Grandfather: Thomas

That is all there is. Was hoping to confirm the information.

Went to the IG site. After going through about 4,000 records could not find him with that date.

Here is the marriage on the IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
An extracted record so pretty reliable.  You might have a date of birth for Thomas.  The IGI has baptisms so it could be any time and in another parish if they happened to be living there at the time.

Thank you for your assistance. The links you gave only take me to the search page not the record. The baptism date is 10 May 1812 North Ferriby, Yorkshire, England

There's something not quite right here - Mother's name changes from Ruth to Mary? Am I missing something?

So sorry! It should be (I think) Mary Crathorne. Don't know where I came up with Ruth but I won't rule that out.

If you have the number of the record on IG I can locate what you found by that.

Thanks.

I think you'll have to wait for Sillgen to come back online - I can't find anything - sorry!

Only thing I can find on IGI at the moment is a christening for Mary Crathorne 2.10.1779, North Ferriby - Father Alexander Crathorne

This page should take you to the North Ferriby records on IGI - you'll need to scroll down the page to find North Ferriby

No sign of Thomas there either

When you search the IGI put in the name and an approximate date plus or minus 10 or whatever.  eg search for a marriage for John Watson and Mary Crathorne.   We know it was in 1800 becuase Laurina and I have already found it.   When you get it up on the screen click on the batch number at the bottom and just put a surname in the search box.  That will show all mentions of that name on that film.  The marriage batch numbers satrt with M.   If you change that M to a C you often (not always) get the Christenings.  That is what I did to find their four children as quoted by Laurina.   If Thomas is not showing up on that or via the Hugh Wallis site then the chances are that he was baptised elsewhere in a parish not on the IGI.
The names of the children are tying in nicely with Mary's father being Alexander and George's middle name is almost bound to be a surname further back so very helpful.
If you are anywhere near an LDS family history sentre (they are worldwide) then you could order the film of North Ferriby and search it there at your leisure.  There might be many helpful hints in the actual register.  Occupations, addresses, burials etc.

There is something wrong with your searching technique here!   Are you using the Advanced Search option and going straight to the IGI?    Once there you must cut it down to approximate dates or you will have thousand of records to go through which is very disheartening.  Using the Hugh Wallis site takes you straight to the parish you want but I never do that as I prefer to see if there is a possible entry in a nearby parish.   Many a babe was baptised when they were visiting mum or working elsewhere temporarily and the vicar came round and told them to do it.
Have you any idea of occupation for this family?

Thanks for that tip Andrea, I didn't know you could do that.
