Can anyone look up some names at the Family records office?
« on: Thursday 04 August 05 17:54 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for the name and death reference of a woman who died some time between 1928 and 1940. She was known as granny dropmore, and we know her surname was Jaycock. She may possibly have been called Emily, but we aren't sure. She would have died in the Surrey area, quite possibly within the Kingston district. We think she was born around 1850 give or take 10 to 15 years. I hope someone can help. Thanks.

Hi M Elworthy, and welcome to Rootschat.  I'm not off to the Family Records Office, but there maybe other ways.  Was Jaycock her maiden name?

My grandmothers were always called Grandma Sill and Grandma Brown so perhaps she married a Mr Dropmore?   Or was it a nickname.  There are only 206 entries for the name Jaycock in 1901 so it should be a fairly easy name to trace.   Try looking at the 1901 index on www.census.pro.gov.uk

She was called granny Dropmore because she lived in Dropmore before she moved to Surbiton where her adoptive daughter lived when she was married. This daughter was my mother. I only knew her as granny dropmore. Her surname was Jaycock, and i know she was some kind of Aunt before she adopted my mother. I'm not sure whether she was married, I never knew her husband if she was. I found the names Thomas and Emily Jaycock in a birthday book. I looked up these names on the census, and found they were married and born in Cookham and Taplow area. Emily's maiden name was Hopgood. Unfortunatly, I have nothing solid to link these names to my granny dropmore.  I do know that she died when I was very young, so about 1930 to 1935 or so, and I think she died in hospital, which may have or may not have been near where we lived in Surbiton, Surrey. She lived with us in the last years of her life.

Hi Elworthy

I suggest you contact the Surrey History Service.
http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/sccwebsite/sccwspages.nsf/LookupWebPagesByTITLE_RTF/Contacting+Surrey+History+Service?opendocument

Ask them if they would look up the electoral roll at the address you last knew Grannie Jaycock at- that would give you her exact name at least.
Alternately any large library holds the BMD indexes on microfiche and you would be able to search through a few years for her death.
There is of course the pay per view site 1837online,the more credits you buy the cheaper it works out-pro rata.

The 1901 only has 2 Emily Jaycock's one in Ashtead Surrey in fact but she is only 7.
Unfortunately the time span is too great for me to look up on the pay per view site.

Good luck,

Carol

Hi

Just doing some housekeeping on the Surrey boards and going through the oldest posts. Now there are further resources available it gives a chance for old posts to be looked at again to see if the information can be found or the chance for posters to say whether this information has been answered and this topic can be completed. If it can be completed please put completed into the title of this topic and it can be moved to Surrey completed (it is never lost off Rootschat) giving more space for other topics to be looked at again by all of us to see if we can help. If you are still looking for the information perhaps you can now add further details to help others search again for you.

Regards
