Lodging with the Smiths above.   One / means separate household.  Two // means separate dwelling.

Later censuses say how many rooms they're living in as well.   Rapson seems to be a Devon/Cornwall name looking at the censuses.   Mariners perhaps.

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk has the marriages:

John MARTIN m Caroline M RAPSON 1897 Liverpool, Our Lady & St. Nicholas & St. Anne
John H MARTIN m Caroline DICK 1900 Fairfield, St. John The Divine

Has the second one definitely been eliminated due to the birth of John William?

Have we found John & Caroline MARTIN in the 1901 census? - apols if I've missed it....

Checked the 1901 and can eliminate the second marriage.

John H MARTIN is listed with his initial + wife Caroline nee DICK and son Douglas aged 3 months - also other members of the DICK family.

Give that wonderful person a coconut!!!!  Grin

I've been trawling around and I've managed to find Mary, Ann and Carolines parents marriage in 1867.

He seems to change between Thomas and John Rapson but he married Mary Hooper  20/10/1867 in Liverpool.

So I checked the 1871 census - to find them in Liverpool, where Mary was born, but low and behold Thomas is stated as a Marniner who hails from Cornwall!!

A fine bit of work there guys well done.

Can't thank you enough for all your guidance.

I've only the other side of the family to unravel now - the Nelsons!!
