Birth of James Souter 1835 missing from Scotlands People - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 29 June 09 21:16 BST (UK) »

I have been looking for the birth details of James Souter (various spellings) who according to the 1911 Census was born in Forfarshire c. 1835.  Through other census records going back to 1841 I believe his parents were James Souter and Mary MacFarlane.  Whilst there is a marriage on Scotlands People for James and Mary in 1833 there is no birth of a James Souter in 1835 or his sisters Margaret and Jean.  On the 1861 Census Margaret and Jean are noted as being born in Dundee (the family have moved to London by this time).

Even if I have made the entirely wrong connection and the parents of my James are not James and Mary MacFarlane I would still expect a birth record on Scotlands People for James Souter @ Forfarshire in 1835.

To my knowledge all the family moved to London so sadly there is no death record to review that would give me the info.

What have I missed, why is he missing??

Thanks
Sparkle

Anyone able to help??

Hello Sparkle

Unfortunately before compulsory registration in 1855, registration was a hit and miss affair as the link below explains.

Also records on SP are only those of the 'Established Church'.

Regards,   Steve .

Hello Steve

Many thanks for the response, the explanation you kindly attached suggests that the births were probably not recorded.

James's mother (I think) Mary Macfarlane was baptised in 1811 by Revered Frew who was the Minister of the Dissenting Congregation in Perth.  Does this sound like a 'non established' church to you??

If the birth records are not on Scotlands People are they likely to be anywhere else?  This is the 1st branch of may family to originate in Scotland and I am not sure where to go next.

Many thanks

Yes. The 'established church' refers exclusively to the Church of Scotland. It does not refer to any other denomination, such as the Free Church of Scotland, the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland, or any other.

Probably not, but don't give up hope. You never know what might turn up.

Always worth a look at IGI on www.familysearch.org .

There are some extracted records from records other than those of the Established Church of Scotland.

And even if it's a patron submission, then, if you're fortunate, the info will be accurate and/or you will be able to track down the submitter.

Is there any evidence from later records, particularly marriages, that churches other than the Established Church of Scotland were involved?
