The Wow factor of the Mitchell
« on: Monday 29 June 09 20:47 UTC (UK) »

We have just returned from a fascinating trip up to Glasgow.
Having decided to stay at Balloch near Loch Lomond (for the scenery), we went into Glasgow Charing Cross by train. A short dash across the road, found us at the Mitchell library.

What a wonderful, spacious, airy interior, we were pleasantly surprised.
The staff worked their socks off to help us find the answers to our ancestor queries. I cannot sing their praises enough.  The cafe also was modern and welcoming. I would recommend anyone with Glasgow ancestors to research, to give the Mitchell a visit.

The whole trip was just great and the warmth of the Glaswegians the best!
Thanks to all the Rootchatters who put us on to it.

So pleased to hear you had both an enjoyable and friutful visit to The Mitchel.
Its so nice to hear others singing the staff's praises as a regular visitor I can relate to the fact that they are very helpful and always go that extra mile.

Thanks again Gerry,
We took a copy of the info you gave us. It was invaluable and getting there early was good advice.

We have maps, p.o. directory and voters rolls details. Which have helped to ascertain the whereabouts of the families.

After a search of the poor law index, we were able to check the actual books, which were both fascinating and very sad.  On closer inspection we did not find the names to be our ancestors, I think we would have been quite emotional had any of them proven to be linked.

Best wishes
