19th century immigration bonds(Completed - Thank you)
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 13:19 UTC (UK) »

Whilst researching in the online newspapers, I discovered a snippet concerning one of my ancestors

"The following judgements were given for the plaintiff, no defence being offered. Superintendent v. (various names) amount still unpaid on immigration bonds . . . also Richard Bryan £6. . . - Mr Hesketh appeared for the plaintiff; Mr J Moginie proving the liability in each case."

This was reported in an 1870 newspaper.

What were immigration bonds? and what had my ancestor done (or not done?)

Thanks

Sian

Hi Sian  Cheesy
http://www.archives.govt.nz/docs/pdfs/Ref_Guide_Migration.pdf
This is an archives ref gide on immigration
Many settlers were assisted by loans and schemes to travel here

Which ship did he come on? often the report will give details on the nature of their voyage, assisted or not

Hi Althea,

I've no idea what ship he arrived on. He was a mariner b. in Wales.

He has a Kew reference no. 88045. 2nd mate issued 1868. Kew ref. 122/58. Then comes the newspaper ref to his immigration bond, and the next ref I have is that he was mate on the "Hadda" Otago Witness, 26 April 1873, Page 12
So he had obviously settled in N.Z.

Thanks for the immigration bond link.

Hi Althea,

The link you sent has a section on assisted passage and repayment methods, but unfortunately has nothing on immigration bonds.

The family story that we had, was that he had left his ship in New Zealand and stayed there. So I'm wondering if he had to pay something in order to have the right to stay in the country and become a citizen. Or maybe someone in the country had to stand surety for him and he had defaulted on payments?

You may have already noticed, but there appears at leat 2 Richard Bryan's one in Auckland and one in Otago
That immigration bond ref is reported in the Southern Cross and Auckland paper, so may be for the Auckland R B.

The webpage isn't the easiest to read but contains the following reference.

"The Commissioners were induced to revive the old scheme of bringing
out the friends of settlers on bonds being signed in the Colony for
the repayment of their passages,"

This may be what you are looking for.

Hi Sian

In the early history of New Zealand immigration, these "bonds" are most usually referred to as "promissory notes" - (and generally they relate to monies owed for passage to New Zealand).

Thank you to Althea - think you are correct about the newspaper being about the other Richard Bryan.

And thank you to Althea, nicoleh13 and Lu for all the extra info and the links.

Hi Sian

There is evidence that a "Richard BRYAN" was present in Auckland, as early as 1855 ("Electors of the Province of Auckland")  ... and in 1868 a "Crown grant" (of land ?) made to a Richard BRYAN.

I've no idea what ship he arrived on. He was a mariner b. in Wales.

....    and the next ref I have is that he was mate on the "Hadda" Otago Witness, 26 April 1873, Page 12

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

Otago Witness - 3 May 1905 - Page 30 - "Casualties"

... this article mentions the death of a "Richard BRYAN" - aged 60 - a native of Wales.    Huh

Hi Lu,

Yes, the Aukland Richard Bryan is not my ancestor, but the second ref to the Death of Richard Bryan is 'my' Richard Bryan. From what I've been able to work out, he spent his time on South Island in Otago province mainly in the Dunedin area, although he then (after his marriage (or relationship - 6 children later, but I can't find a marriage in the records) ended, he ended up working on Teviot Station Roxburgh and died in that area in 1905. He was also commited to an asylum for a period in 1902.

So I've still got more to find out about him and his life in New Zealand, but I now understand more about immigration bonds.

Thank you for your interest and information.
