Hi Emms, i have a list of all men buried or have a CWGC grave in Phillips Park Manchester  for ww1&2 which includes private graves. I still think there maybe more i have not found. You can search the CWGC site for each cemetery like i did for all the other Manchester & Salford graves. I transcribed all of the Manchester & Salford ones a while back but lost the lot when one of my hard drives burnt out and i lost everything before i had chance to make back up copies. I will get round to them again some time but when? I have a ton of other records to try and get back/trace again which i lost . I also have photos of many of the CWGC graves in Many of the manchester cemeteries too.

The National Roll of Honour for the Great War 1914 - 1918 has volumes for both Manchester and Salford. You may be able to get a look at a copy through inter-library loan and I'm pretty sure it's on A----y. It is not a complete record, as families had to send in details and not all did, but it's possibly the nearest you are going to get all in one place.

Only trouble with A******y is it states the wrong location as to where the men enlisted.

Hi,

I have found a National Roll of the Great War  for Manchester - by accident I might add  Roll Eyes

I was on www.spinningtheweb.org.uk and did a search at the top of the page where it says Global Search and all the pages of this book came up.  All the names are in alphabetical order but you have to scroll through as there is no index and you have to zoom them up a bit so the pages are big enough to read.

There is some really interesting information on there.

Best of luck.

Hi

Thank you all for the replies.

I have got a Manchester volume of the Roll of Honour and a kind offer to look in the Salford one.

I seem to get conflicting opinions about how complete these are.

I've looked in the usual places but not managed to pin these down.

Another thought, woul;d anyone know please, how they decided which volume someone went in?  Would it be where they enlisted from?  The base for the regiment?

Linked to that, does anybody know please, if Someone was Irish living in Manchester when they died, would they be in the Manchester volume, also, are there volumes for Ireland?

Thank you again and Thank You also for the link to the online version.  I will pass that on!

Best wishes

Using Geoff's WW1 search engine at
http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search14-21.php
I get 1561 returns for SALFORD.
and 15,151 for Manchester.
Using SDITGW you can search for born in, resident in and enlisted in.

Hi

thank you for that.

Evidently something I should have a good play with.

I hadn't really taken in that it was a search engine!

Besy wishes

As I understand it the National Roll of Honour was a commercial publication and, rather like the trade directories of the time, people were invited to submit information to the producers. So, it is not a complete listing of everyone who served from a particular area; the coverage only extends to those who chose to contribute. I don't think that any attempt was made to ensure full coverage. It seems to be based on the location of the men concerned at the time of enlistment - so all those from Salford would be in that volume.

The final total number of volumes fell short of what was originally expected and not all of the country was covered. I am not aware of any volumes covering Ireland.

You will almost cetainly have to cross reference whatever you find with other sources:

The CWGC website of soldiers who died in WW1
Soldiers who Died in the Great War

just to name the most obvious ones.
