The oral family story of Robert Wickham my 3 x gr grandfather falling overboard on his return to England after completing work in Sth Africa for the Government may be just that a story. In May 1815 Robert Wickham a native of England applies to the Governor Lord Somerset for permission to remain in the colony. He had been in the employ of a T T Harrington Esq, received his discharge and had other offers of work and wish to remain in the colony. He had arrived on the Scaleby Castle. In August 1825 a Robert Wickham is living at Plettenberg Bay, is a stonemason and asks permission to make a stone quarry and another undated letter asks permission for himself and Thomas Fitzpatrick, stonemasons to return to Robben Island to look after their property on said island but there is a quarantine in place. Could there be 2 Robert Wickhams stonemasons in the colony in those years.Did Robert stay and make another life.In 1837 when the children had grown up and married Ann went to America with married daughters. Can anyone help me with this?

Just a little bit of help, do you know that Plettenberg Bay is way up the East Coast of South Africa, and not at Cape Town itself? At one time I lived near Plett, as it is nicknamed, and by road, in modern times, it's a good 6 hour journey, by car, from Plett - Cape Town. 
Robben Island, as I'm sure you know, is in the ocean, off Cape Town. 
So, geographically, perhaps there are 2x Robert Wickhams, as they both don't appear to be in Cape Town.
Have you tried searching the N.A.A.I.R.S. site, focusing perhaps on the Cape Province region for any Wickhams?

thank you for your reply. I have not thought about where the places are but I do think that he could have moved about in those years. In 1815 in Cape Town and 1825 living at Plettenberg bay and asking for a particular piece of land near a Mr Van Rooijans property and a undated one trying to get permission to return to his home on Robben Island while there was a quarantine on. I have tried the NAIIRS site but it was down twice and when I did get through I couldn't seem to work out the system. Any helpful hints.

Well, your Robert Whickham is certainly a man of mystery!
Have trawled through just about every site for you in NAAIRS and it appears that he might have been the "sleeping partner", so to speak of his alliance with Thomas Fitzpatrick, on paper anyway.
In NAAIRS, from 1806 - 1834, there are about 30 references to various dealings with the government, that Thomas Fitzpatrick had.
Ranging from 1806, where it appears Fitzpatrick first applied to establish a stone masonry business, Co 3856 68, to Co 3859 398, which is an application for land. Co 3859 469, Application to Burn Lime and so on, to 1813, when he's making some sort or request to do with Robben Island.
However, in 1834 it all seems to come a bit unstuck for Fitzpatrick as he is court, CSC 2/6/1/13 an application brought against him by, Landbou Bank!
But, later on during 1834 he's granted land!

With regard to Robben Island, there are various dates given for its commencement for use as both a leper colony and an animal quarantine station at the same time, but roughly between, 30 March, 1823, when the 49th Regiment/1st Royal Berkshire were withdrawn.
Could it perhaps be that both your Robert Whickham and his partner, Thomas Fitzpatrick both were working together, as stonemasons on Robben Island, when the British Colonial Government decided to use it solely for the use of lepers and animals in quarantine, hence their possibly being 'removed' and having to go elsewhere to work, in this case, up to Plett?

As I can find no references to Robert Whickham in NAAIRS, might I suggest that you email them instead and specifically ask all that you need to know?
I would contact the nearest NAAIRS centre to Plett and the email address given for that is:

Good morning Danchaslyn,
I am very appreciative of the effort you have gone to to help me. It would seem that Robert W went to work with/for Fitzpatrick after his memorial to the Governor re staying in the colony dated 22.8.1815. Fitzpatrick went security for his good conduct.The memorial to the Governor undated talks of permission to return to their property on Robben Island consisting of their whole stock in trade. Returning on their sloop boat with 2 hands. Letter signed by both.I am guessing that as Robert W is writing a memorial to the Governor August 1825 for the stone quarry permit he has severed ties with Fitzpatrick and had to start his own business. In this memorial he mentions that if given permission he may by his endeavours better maintain his family. If this is indeed my 3xgr grandfather there could be more 'family' in South Africa. That would be excellent. I will e-mail an enquiry and see if more to the story. I have really appreciated your help.

What an intriguing and interesting story!
Please let me know if you get a response to your email, the first NAAIRS email address I tried, was bounced back, and I had to find another one, but the one I have given you, is I think the most appropriate for the Plett area.
I remember a Whickham School in Pietermaritzburg, in the then Natal, but googling it now, I can't find it!
Try also a dip into The South Africa White Pages, their residential phone book, try each different province, preferably starting with the Cape, then Eastern Cape, then Natal and I'm sure you will find "Whickhams"!
