On site research help- Bradford
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 00:30 UTC (UK) »

Seeking research help in Bradford in anticipation of a UK trip in the fall. I don't have the time to do the research myself (I'm in Canada) so would appreciate any referrals to a good researcher in the area. Specifically, would like to find gravesites in Bradford and the fate of a family living in Bradford in the early 1900s, but who have fallen off the online radar after 1912.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi Katherine,

Thanks for your reply. I'll try posting data here first and hopefully someone will be able to help.

I'm looking for the following:

Burial sites for the following individuals:

Emma Melissa Cockerham (nee Waterhouse) died Sept 4, 1947 in Bradford, age 67

Elizabeth Haigh (nee Cutt) died July 25, 1899, in Bradford, age 77

Eliza Haigh, died Feb 22, 1927 in Bradford, age 76

I would also like to find out what happened to the following family:

Werner Aschenbach, b 1862, married Kate Haigh (born 1866) in 1898, father of Charles Haigh Aschenbach, born Jan 1, 1907. Werner was a wool merchant in Bradford, office at 4 Duke St (information from the 1912 Bradford Directory). Home address: 5 Walmer Villas, Manningham, Bradford. There is no data on the internet on any members of the family after 1912.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi Wayne,

Thought I would have a look at the Aschenbach's first!  I wondered if because of the outbreak of WWI whether they changed their surname and bingo; found a death registration for Charles Haigh Ashwell, born 1 Jan 1907, died in the registration district of Bradford, age 78 in 1985.

Werner Ashwell died in Bradford in 1921, aged 59 (which fits nicely with being born in 1862!).

Kath

Added:  Werner is in the 1921 Bradford Telephone Directory under the surname Ashwell and is still listed at 5 Walmers Villas, also son Charles H is still at the same address in 1934 listed as an estate agent - right better get to work Cry

Katherine:

Your're a genius! I had thought the family emigrated given Werner's German background and the onset of the War; it never occurred to me they changed their surname. Thank you very much for this very interesting data!!
