Now  that is a pity  might have had some clues.
True  too what Cando  is  saying  but we won't know . Grin

I  don't know what  to offer  to help  you  find  about  his time in Australia and  where and when he did arrive.

if you've not already got it, you could add this on your list of leads to follow up:

Ship "La Hogue" from London arriving NSW 11 DEC 1856
NSW, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922

... possible that he arrived in NSW first...?

I'm not very sure about it  to be honest
I have been trying to make guesses with other Philip JONES with wife called Ann in Montmouthsire ... but no certaincy
:-(
Gwen Jenn has a good point about the witnesses however bear in mind sometimes the witnesses can be the next couple waiting to be married or employees of the minister.

Do you think it is your Philip on the census on reply#15?

Attempting to keep the thread to pre NZ Grin

Cheers

Re the census 1841 entry with Ann and Philip Watkins (obviously grand parents ...) yes it's a possibility
census 1841 is such a 'light' piece of evidence  Sad (no family relation, estimates etc...)

Hi Gwenn

When you look at the image of the Philip in Christchurch in the 1851 census you mention directly above  the age is mistranscribed as 19 - it's actually 10 which fits better also with the age of the other children and the age of the mother. So at least that's another one down!
