COMPLETED THANKS - James & Ann PARKIN - Census details 1871, 1891 & 1901 please
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 06:56 UTC (UK) »

Good morning,

I am looking for Census information 1871, 1891 & 1901 on the following household:

James PARKIN b. Middlesmoor Yorks c1835
Ann (wife née WRIGHT) b. Osmotherley 1844

They married in Guisborough in 2ndQ 1867 and by 1871 would have had 2 children:
- Hannah b. 1868
- William b. 1870         Both born Guisborough.

In 1881 there were a further 4 children:
- James b. 1873
- Robert Wright b. 1875
- Joseph Layfield b. 1876
- Theodore b. 1880                 All born Guisborough

In 1881 the family was living at 8 Chaloner Pit, Guisborough & Tocketts.
James's occupation is recorded as Ironstone Miner Overman

I would be grateful if anyone would be kind enough to hunt out the relevant census details.

Many thanks,

Nick

Hello Soureau
Just noticed your Parkin query - although completed.

Do you know if your Parkin had any connection to the Grout family of Guisborough?

My grandfather's sister Emma Mullen born Grout 1874 married  a James Allison Parkin September quarter 1895, Guisborough.

Many ironstone miners in the Grout family.

Good evening,

And thanks for your message. The short answer is "no", I don't know whether there is any connection with the Grout family, not having gone down that track yet.

Having said that, Guisborough was not a huge town in those days and it is quite conceivable. My Parkin family had a son called James, who figures with the family in 1891 as a tailor's apprentice, but not in 1901, and would have been about 22 in 1895.

I must admit that I haven't as yet had the time to look for the marriages of the Parkin children. It might be worth checking the 1901 census to see what James PARKIN & wife Emma were doing, whether they were in Guisborough for example, and whether the places of birth correspond.

Let me know if you find anything interesting.

Best wishes,

Nick

Hi Nick
1901 census James Parkin 38 (1862/3) night scavenger born Heckmondwicke
Does that ring any bells?

Emma wife 27                   all born Guisborough
Mary Ann Parkin  daughter 5
James G Parkin  son 3
Leafy M Parkin  daughter 1

They are living 19 Mill Street Guisborough, next door to Emma's brother Edward Grout and his family .

1911
James Parkin 48  night soil man born Heckmondwike Yorks
Emma wife 37                        all born Guisborough
Alex Mullon son 20 (This should be Mullen and is Emma's son from her first marriage)
Mary Mullon daughter 15
James Grout Mullon son 14
Leaffy May Mullon daughter 13
Emma Alexandra Mullon daughter 2

The last four children are all Parkin not Mullon (or Mullen), Emma's first husband Mullen died in 1890.

Still living 19 Mill Street

Good evening Margaret,

Thanks for all the information forwarded. On the strength of it, we are talking about two different James PARKINS I'm afraid.

"My" James was definitely born 1873 in Middlesmoor, North Yorks and would therefore have been 28 years old in 1901.

"Your" James is 38 in 1901 and not born in the same place.

Seems like a non-runner I fear. Still, it was worth a try.

Good hunting !
