thanks  for that

the other sister Annie Elizabeth  who where and when  did she marry
if you  have  the certificate?

any  clues on  that if so?

I  ask  all these question  because sometimes we can find parents especially widowed parents living with their children on  the electoral rolls

As Annie Elizabeth married Matthew BOGNUDA in 1897 her marriage certificate may not reveal anything more about her parents that is detailed on Mary Isabella's in 1900.

Her daughter was married in qld to a man from Victoria who later became a mayor of or councilor of Brisbane.

Not quite Grin

http://www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/documents/heritage/bundamba.pdf

Bognuda Street
Probably named after Matthew Bognuda who was Chairman of the Purga Shire Council in 1906 and
1913. He was an Alderman of that shire from1904-1905, 1907, 1909-1912 and in 1914. This street name
appears on the 'Drysdale Estate Map' dated 1913.

On the Australian Electoral Rolls Matthew and Annie lived at Dinmore and his occupation was potter.  His death in 1922 is on the Qld bdm.

Birth in Victoria
BOGNUDA Matthew
Father Mattia Mother Susan STEVENSON
At Sandridge  1863  Reg#4525

It appears some of the family may have moved to Qld...this is possibly his father's death as on Matthew's death reg the father is noted as Matthew Joseph
1906/C2821
BOGNUDA Gosepi Mattia
Father Antonia Bognuda    Mother Catherine Gugga

and on their marriage in 1871 after the birth of three children - mistranscription of surname.
STEVENSON Susannah
BOGUNDA Matthew
1871   Reg#1500

Jenn has asked for these details on the electoral roll.

New South Wales Electoral Roll 1903
HOLMES James Albert  6 Longdown Street, Camperdown  Occupation  Painter.

He is alone at that address.

I suggest you browse the NSW death indexes for the deaths.  There is one possibility for James A in 1915 aged 73 years at Newton.  As there doesn't appear to be a death for Catherine in Qld to 1929 she possibly died in NSW.

That is because it was in  1903 Electoral Roll  for NSW  that isn't included in  the Ancestry records.

Thanks  for  looking  that up Cando  seems  you  have found him  and if it is his death in 1915 at Newtown  well Scott could order  this death  certificate  through a  transcription agent

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,300394.0.html

You  will  get  the actual  date of deaths for the Bognuda at  the  Ipswich cemetery  and photos of  the grace also

FreeBMD has a marriage of a James Albert HOLMES  Dec qr 1865, reg Birkenhead, Vol 8a, p 742.  On the same page is a Catherine Davies, so perhaps they were married before emigrating.  (In much of the UK, and particulalry in Wales, "Davies" and "Davis" are pronounced the same - "Davis"; and I see the death posted by jamjar uses the 'Davies' spelling.)

And I wonder if this is him on the 1861 census RG9/3160
address: Greenfield, Caton, Lancashire
James A HOLMES, son, 20, plumber and painter, b Caton, Lancashire
He is with parents, John J and Elizabeth HOLMES, four sisters, a brother and a nephew.  I think you have acess to UK censuses?  I didn't post all the info but am happy to if you would like it.

Not sure if either of these are yours or not, but the occupation seems to point to it being a possible.  Caton and Birkenhead are about 60 miles apart though.

Good  find  there Judith,

I  will  admit  to assuming  that Scott had checked  the  Uk Census Shocked. because  he seen  to  have access.

So  that  would put  his  birth around 1841.

If  it is their marriage in 1865 one could assume  that  they  probably emigrated shortly after as their first child Annie Elizabeth was born 24/12/1866.,  then Mary Isabella was born 19/9/1868  and  then a long break  to Catherine Agnes 13/5/1875 she died 26/6/1875.

There is  no death  for either a James Holmes or a Catherine Davies up to 1888 (  checking QLD Pioneer BDMS)

FreeBMD has a birth of James Albert HOLMES, Mar qtr 1842, reg Lancaster Vol 21 p479.  Lancaster includes Caton so it looks likely that this is the chap in the census.  Still not 100% sure it's the right one!  However the date is spot on for the JAH whose death is registered in Newtown.

Hi All,

WOW!! Thank you all very much Smiley

Sounds right I found Catherine last night before I went to bed died in 1902 at Sydney

Parents James & Catherine on BDM of NSW

Narrowed down the dates from the information Cando provided on the 1903 electoral roll

1900 -1903  (1900 when Mary Isabella Was married) & 1903 where James Albert Holmes appears on the electoral Roll

There she was  Shocked .

I have limited access on ancestry where I can't see certain censuses but I can still search

It sounds right with the census records thanks Judith  Cheesy , but yes still need to find more evidence to confirm as the rule of 3 right Smiley in order to verify the correct James

Cheers

The only  way  you  will actually  confirm  you  have  the right couple is to buy  the birth of one of  the children in Qld  an expense I  grant  that,  but will verify so much.  Qld  certifcates are only able  to ordered and paid for at  any qld registery office or send the form  through  the  post and not one line more is the pity.  There is a long wait for  the certifcate to come.

No  don't assume that Catherine  had died before 1903 as it was not complusory  to register to vote back  then and a lot of women certaily didn't.

The other death cert that could be worth getting would be the one for the Catherine died Sydney 1902 that you found on NSW BMDs.  This should eliminate or confirm her and give particulars of her parentage.  There are just so many Catherine Davi/e/s that finding her parents without some  clues is well-nigh impossible.  IF it is the right one then James would have still been alive and would probably be the person giving the information so it should be fairly reliable.

You probably know that using a transcription agent is cheaper and quicker for NSW certificate information - details on the NSW BMD site
