Latin Translation
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 12:09 UTC (UK) »

I'm new to RootsChat (but not Ancestry) so I hope I am in the right Forum.  Anthony Callaghan married Bridget Callaghan at St John's RC Wigan in 1882.  A note in the register's margin reads "obtentra dispensation pro consanguinate in 2 oo gradiu aquali in linra collaterali".  My school Latin just confuses the issue but I wonder if, given the surnames are the same, the couple were related (cousins maybe).  Has anyone any ideas please?

Yes they were 2nd cousins. They had obtained a dispensation [from the pope?] because they were related by blood in the 2nd degree in the Callaghan line. That's about the gist of it.

Thanks so much Paslwigr.  You have helped me resolve something which has been troubling me for some time.
