Trish1120's Scavenger Hunt... All Welcome to Join In...
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 07:48 UTC (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt.  Barbara apologises for not being able to do the honours as usual, but she is unwell and has asked me to Deputise for her... any errors are mine alone  Cheesy

Have fun with this one.  I am sure that you'll be able to help Trish out .....

Hi All,

The purpose of my Hunt is to establish the facts on my HOLDSWORTH Ancestry.
You will find lots of info and family trees on the net regarding this family which I would appreciate help in sorting out.

FACT David HOLDSWORTH, born 1806-1811 Selby , Yorkshire, is my Great Grandfather.
I have no christening record for him but his father is Benjamin according to his marriage and death certs.

David married twice;
Mary Eliza TORR (1803-1839)Married 29/1/1834 Goxhill,Lincs
Maria/Mary Eliza NETTLEM(1809-1894) Married 7/4/1840, Barton upon Humber, Lincs

He had 4 children from the first marriage;
David, 1834
Mary, 1836
John Torr, 1838
Ann Elizabeth, 1839

William,1841
James, 1842-1843
Eliza, 1844
James, 1845 (probably died 1845 also)
Ann Elizabeth, 1847 (Ama Eliz. on census entry 1851)
Martin Luther, 1849, YKS
All other children reg, Glanford Brigg or Brigg,Lincs

1841 Census in Barton upon Humber, Lincs
HO107/627/8/Barton upon Humber St Peter

1851 Census Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire
HO107/2233/232/2

On 1841 is a Jane HOLDSWORTH, 20, ind, not born in county.Probable sister of David.

The Holdsworths apparently emigrated to New Zealand via Melbourne, Australia. they are first documented in NZ early 1860's.
I have found no record of their arrival Australa or New Zealand.

ANN ELIZABETH HOLDSWORTH married John SHAW 1869 in NZ. They are my great/grandparents.

WHAT I NEED TO ESTABLISH IS;
Was Ann the child of Mary TORR or Mary NETTLEM
Was she staying with other family members in 1851 like her sister Mary?.Or had she died?
Ann SHAWS death cert states her to have died age 89 in 1930. Her obit also. This makes her born c1840/41

There is much more I can post but will leave that until tomorrow when this is posted.

I would also like to confirm baptisms, parents and siblings of David Holdsworth and Mary Nettlem.

I do not need anything on the Torr line as he heaps of info on them.

Cheers,
Trish

Hi Trish,

Struggling to find a David Holdsworth, but I am sure you are aware that a Benjamin Holdsworth married Mary Briggs in Selby in 1800 (7th October).  It appears, from the IGI, that there were several children potentially from this marriage:
1. THOMAS HOLDSWORTH - Birth: 08 JUN 1804 Selby, Yorkshire, England

2. WILLIAM HOLDSWORTH - Birth: 03 OCT 1808 Selby, Yorkshire, England

3. JOSEPH HOLDSWORTH - Birth: 31 JUL 1806 Selby, Yorkshire, England

4. ELIZABETH HOLSWORTH - Christening: 29 APR 1802 Selby, Yorkshire, England

5. JONATHAN HOLSWORTH - Christening: 14 APR 1801 Selby, Yorkshire, England

6. ROBERT HOLDSWORTH - Birth: 17 FEB 1811 Selby, Yorkshire, England

7. SARAH HOLSWORTH - Christening: 03 NOV 1803 Selby, Yorkshire, England

COuld these be siblings?

Ann Elizabeth Holdsworth bn Dec qtr 1839 Brigg 14 335, same qtr as Mary Holdsworth died (Glanford Brigg 14 219)

Without the certs, I would assume from the dates that Mary (Torr) died as a result of childbirth complications giving birth to Ann.  Obviously though, the certs will confirm that.

Or did you mean the second Ann Elizabeth?

Hi Spider Smiley

Thank you for all that info, esp the baptisms of the early Holdsworth children which I had been unable to find.
Yes, Mary Briggs is the one everyone has as the Mother of David.
BUT the only possible siblings of David that I could find were;
Mary, 10 January 1813, Selby
Benjamin, 10 May 1815, Selby
JANE, 9 October 1817,Selby
All with parents Benjamin and Mary

There is also this marriage;
Benjamin HOLSDWORTH, Mary BROOK, 7 August 1808, Halifax,YKS

There is a Jane, 20, on 1841 Census with David and Mary so it appears she was a sibling.
But are all these children 1802-1817 Benj and Mary Briggs or  not Huh

WOW, my head is spinning Wink
Yes, Mary Torr/Holdsworth died after giving birth/have death cert.
Have both marriage cert/parish reg entry as well for Davids 2 marriages.
Just checked again and yes, John Nettlem was her Father. All the info you have found corresponds with other family trees Grin

Benjamin Holdsworth snrs occp is draper. Can you find him 1841, I have been unable too.

To answer your original question I am not sure what happened to the Ann Elizabeth born 1839. She appears 1841 Census but have been unable to find a conclusive death for her.
Purchasing the 1847 birth cert. would propably not help with my search.

Could be a coincidence, but in 1871, Jane Holdsworth is visiting Ann Briggs (relation of her mother in some way?) RG10; Piece: 4730; Folio: 4; Page: 1
