The mysterious Jemima Lythgoe: 1851 Salford
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 21:08 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have any information on the mysterious Jemima Lythgoe, born c 1851 in Salford, Lancs?  She married one of my ancestors, George William Poole, born 1846 in Binley, Warwicks.  They were married on 30 Aug 1870 in Manchester and had a daughter Sarah Alice Poole, born 1874 in Salford.

In the 1871 census, George is living with his in-laws, Cornelius Lythgoe and his wife Elizabeth, in Salford.  There is no trace of Jemima.  In 1881, George is boarding in Salford and his daughter Sarah Alice is living with her grandparents the Lythgoes.  Again, no trace of Jemima.

In 1891, Jemima is back at home with her parents, but her name is Jemima Carr!  George may have died and she could have remarried but I cannot trace either a death or a remarriage.  Jemima Carr died in 1891.

Did she ever live with George?  How did they manage to have a daughter?
Where was she between 1871 and 1891?  Any help very gratefully received!

Hello

In 1881, do you think that the lady listed at Salford RG11/3967 Folio 107 Page 24 as Jemima Bole, aged 28 and married, who is a Tailoress, boarding at 19 Bright Street, Salford, might be her ?

It certainly seems to say Bole on the original census sheet but the enumerator could have simply misread the word Poole from his own notes.

There does not seem to be a similar Jemima Bole mentioned anywhere else.

Hi

You are brilliant!!  Yes, it is her - her father Cornelius was a tailor, so it all fits perfectly.

I am knocked out by Rootschat - within hours of registering and posting my query, I have an answer!  Still need to find her in 1871 though.

Thanks again.
