I'm wondering if anyone might be able to help me figure out the ancestry of my gx2-Grandfather, Louis DUPEYRON...?
I know of the main details of his life after he moved from France to Guernsey (Channel Isl.) c. 1890.
But his childhood in France, the names of his parents etc -- a complete mystery.
I do know he was born about 1862. The 1891/1901 C.I. Census says his birthplace is "Condon, France". But the 1911 C.I. Census says birthplace is "St.Michel, France".
He married Marie Catherine LE MEE prior to 1890 in France -- but I don't know where. She was from Lantic, Brittany, and I have found her birth reg. but no records of her marriage there.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Gwenn, you genius!!!
Found my way in (thank you, highschool french) & there is so much more on this site than the other Lantic site I found in the past.
I'm crossing my fingers that I can find a marriage cert for Louis (i.e. that he got married to Marie Catherine LE MEE) in her hometown rather than his (wherever in France that was).
Will come back to let you know

Gwenn, just wanted to let you know what happened
I had no luck finding any mention of DUPEYRON unfortunately, so that one's still a mystery.
However! There are loads of documents re: the other main name I was looking for in France (LE MEE) which I knew so little about before today as well.
Now, I've managed to go back another 3 generations, in fact 10 "new" direct ancestors, and I'm absolutely thrilled, to say the least. And I've not even finished looking at everything there yet
Thank you so much for helping to shed such light on one of my greatest family mysteries.

http://www.geopatronyme.com/cgi-bin/carte/nomcarte.cgi?nom=Dupeyron&submit=Valider&client=cdip - shows the name Dupeyron has a strong link to the SW of France, including the department of Gers, and also in the city of Condom within that department (could sound like Condon).
http://www.genea.com.fr/archives/ar-32.htm - addresses for archives. There doesn't seem to be anything online that I can find in an initial sweep.
It's possible they met in the St. Malo area. It's nearish her home town, he could have moved there for work or because he had family in the area/who were on their way to/already living in Guernsey. Or maybe the Mont-Saint-Michel area? It seems more likely that he moved into that area, married her somewhere around there, and then they moved across.
Are there any other Dupeyrons in the same part of Guernsey who might be related to him?

Wow Jorose!!!! You have just totally given me some fresh new leads to explore.
For starters, I couldn't find "Condon" anywhere except "Andert-et-Condon", and I've never been able to find any Dupeyrons there.
But, of course, you're right! I got that one reference to Condon from the C.I. Census, and it would be easy for the enumerator to mistake Condom for Condon.
(Maybe he thought it sounded a bit saucy to be true as well! )
And so there you go, I didn't even know there was a Condom in France, didn't ever cross my mind.
You're amazing!!!
Thank you also so much for the other suggestions & leads you provided; I feel so excited that I've finally got a chance of breaking through the brick wall.
Will bumble around to try to follow all this up & will be sure to come back & let you know how I get on!
Thanks so much again, Jorose.

p.s. Forgot to answer your question!
There weren't any Dupeyrons in Guernsey before Louis & family arrived there -- the only other family they had was his father in law (Eugene LE MEE) who they took along with them around 1890.
In fact, you raise a good point, I haven't figured out why exactly they all up & left France.
Louis was a carpenter & Eugene was a fruit grower (small scale, like a market garden). So doesn't really sound like work was the reason either...

Well, from St. Malo it is actually reasonably close; so it's not a huge jump, and the language was the same, so not at all like heading off to America or Australia or something. Louis moving all the way up from Gers department to the Lantic area was a bigger jump - but of course might not have all happened at once as we don't know if his family moved a lot.
I would suggest you look for all Marie Catherine's immediate family as far forward as the Lantic records permit - i.e. when did her mother die, did her siblings marry/die in Lantic, can you figure out whenabouts the family left that area. Also look closely at her birth record and all her siblings records for marginal notes - these are not standardised but occasionally you will see notes in the margins that are later references added when a person married or died.

That's wonderful advice, Jorose -- I only just found the leads from another kind person on here (Gwenn) today to discover the Marie Catherine's family in Lantic for the first time. There are so many records on there for them I think it's going to take me a fair while! But you're so right, it's a very logical place to start.
I also just emailed the Condom archive contact (from one of the links you gave me earlier) to ask if they happen to know anything about Louis' birth & parents/ancestry there.
I haven't slept in about 48 hours at the moment so am off to bed - and will be doing so very happily thanks to all your help!!

I had a little look myself-- I can only see Marie Catherine Le Mee and her brother Eugene who was born in 1874 in Lantic - at the time of his birth father Eugene was absent-- travelling looking for work?
Aha! Look at the 1903 marriage of Eugenie (aged 30), daughter of Eugene Marie Le Mee, resident Guernsey, and the late Marie Francoise Mace. It gives a birthdate for her in 1872 but not in Lantic-- in Allineuc, a little ways south of Lantic.
There are some missing death records but it appears the son b. 1874 and wife Marie Francois Mace (you will find her in death indexes under her maiden name, as was standard), in 1889 and 1888 respectively (in Lantic).
Also in Lantic in 1888, Eugenie who married in 1903 had an illegitimate son, Pierre. It seems that the family did move around some, so you'll also have to look in Allineuc (and perhaps try and work out which of the larger towns in the area they might have gone to, say 1889-1890ish.

in Allineuc, the Le Mee siblings (father Eugene is listed as labourer, sometimes listed as Eugene Marie or Eugene Marie Louis): Marie Francoise, 9 Sep 1866 (she may be the one who had an illegitimate daughter in Lantic, Jeanne Leonie b. 1887) Eugene Marie, 27 Jan 1868 Anne Marie, 29 May 1869 Marie Aimee, 15 Dec 1870 Eugenie Mathurine-- b. 2 Jun 1872, mention made in marginal notes of her marriage and her death in 1945 in "Etables", probably nearby Étables-sur-Mer.

You girls are so kind and helpful, you're actually bringing a tear to my eye.
Gwenn --
In Guernsey, Eugene LE MEE was a "Farmer", "Fruit Grower" and a "Gardener" (my dad said he remembers being told it was like a market gardener). His grandson (Maurice Fernand Eugene "Frank" DUPEYRON) grew up with Eugene in Guernsey & appears to have helped him out.
Frank DUPEYRON then came to Australia by himself in 1912 as occ: Farmer (that's where I come from) & although he lived in the city suburbs and did a wide range of labouring jobs here, dad said he continued to grow his own fruit & veg at home.
That's a great piece of information re: the shallots story -- it seems very possible to me that Eugene did something like that, if not exactly that! And also the political trouble in France you mentioned; another excellent possibility -- I'll be keeping that in mind now too as I'm searching.
re: the GERS departement search - Oh my word, that's awesome!! I have to go to work in a sec & can't wait to have a look at that link & website tonight!!
Jorose --
You are a super detective!! I can't believe how much you've already found. Just about everything you've written I had absoutely no idea about.
All Eugene's children, I had no idea; apart from Marie Catherine, I did come across Eugene (1874) in an index before & thought it was odd that there was a decade in between the 2 children. Now you've solved that mystery & have given me even more to work with!!
And knowing about Allineuc, the birth & death dates, all this new stuff -- this is all so wonderful.
I can't wait to finish work tonight and continue immersing myself in all of this!!
