COMPLETED -Mary Ann Marsh St Andrew the Less Cambridge Burial Register
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 12:31 BST (UK) »

I have an entry from the CambFHS burial index for Mary Ann Marsh, widow of Thomas age 25 from Willow Walk, Cambridge U.K.  It is for St Andrew the Less, 1829.  She may be the Mary Ann below.

I am having great difficulty in tracing Thomas and Mary Ann, parents of Henry (1822) and Charles (1825) - King Street, All Saints Church.  The burial entry or Mon. Inscription for Mary Ann might help me.  I cannot find any trace of marriage of Thomas or his death, or in the later census.  Charles and Henry were in London by 1841.

Thank you.

Hi,
The entry from St Andrews the Less burial register reads Mary Ann Marsh, wife of Thomas, Willow Walk age 25 was buried 30 Oct 1829.
I can't find a reference to her in the monumental inscriptions for Mill Rd Cemetery, St Andrews the Less section.

There is a marriage in Cambridge Holy Trinity on 7 Oct 1821 for a Thomas Marsh and Mary Ann Turner, botp.
Wits John Turner and John Marsh.

Hi,

On the baptism entries of the two sons, Henry and Charles, the occupation of their father, Thomas, is shown as shoemaker.

Therefore I wonder if this is him in the 1851 Census:

Hackney District Union Workhouse, Homerton, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Middlesex
HO 107 1505 667 5

Thomas Marsh, Pauper, Widr, 58, Shoemaker, born Cambridgeshire, Cambridge

1861 - Thomas Marsh still in same workhouse, now aged 69.

Can't see him in the 1871 but there is a death registered Q4 1868 of a Thomas Marsh, aged 76, Hackney district, 1b 209

Thank you for all the help.  I think the marriage to Turner is probably 'my' Thomas Marsh but as Mary is described as a widow of Thomas Marsh when she dies he cannot be in Hackney later on.  However, this could still be a relative.  I did find a marriage for a Thomas Marsh of Holy Trinity to Eliza Dunford  in 1825 in Phillimore.  Holy Trinity Cambridge is not in Phillimore which is why I couldn't find the marriage.

The son Charles, born 1824/5 also became a shoemaker like his father Thomas, despite it looking as if Thomas had died when Charles was an infant.  Both parents dying so young - before the 1830/1 Trade Directory and the 1841 census makes them a bit difficult to trace.  I have lots of information on the sons from 1851 onwards but now I can concentrate on the Cambridge connection thanks to both of you.   Although I realise that knowing which Marsh's are mine and which are not will be difficult with 2 Thomas's and also another Charles that I found in Histon.  I will buy some parish maps to help me and try to find other Marsh's who were shoemakers.  I know mine lived in King Street and then Willow Walk.  The sons must have either gone to relatives or the workhouse once both parents died.

Thank you again. Smiley Smiley Smiley

Hi,
The marriage between Thomas Marsh and Eliza Dunford took place in St Andrews The Great in Cambridge. I found the banns in Holy Trinity dated 27 Nov 1825. Eliza came from the parish of St Andrews the Great.
Perhaps someone has access to the parish registers on Rootschat which will give more details.

Hi again Homebird,

According to my CD transcription of the burial register of St. Andrew the Less, the Mary Ann Marsh who was buried in 1829 aged 25 is described as the WIFE of Thomas, as tempsford has posted above, and not his widow.

Obviously this makes a considerable difference in your search for Thomas.

Did you get widow from the original register?

I don't know if you are familar with Cambridge but Willow Walk is just across the road from Kings Street.

Just checked the Cambs FH Soc Burial Index, the entry states Mary A. Marsh to be the w. of Thomas - so it seems to me it was wife and he was still alive.

Smiley  Thank you Selina - that makes a huge difference to my research.  I think I got widow from a transcription and it just goes to show how important it is to check original sources.  I am going to spend a bit of time sorting out the info. asI now have quite a lot to look at.  The Thomas/Eliza marriage took place when my Thomas was still married to Mary so cannot be the same one.  What a pity ages are not on there as he could be a relative with the same name.

I am very impressed with the help on this site and will try and help others as well with sources that I have access to here.

Thank you for the info on Thomas's baptism from the IGI - I have had a look there and think it is going to take some detective work to find the original record for this.  There is a URC church in Downing St Cambridge - which might be the one referred to by the IGI.  So I think I will need to look in the non-conformist records - I might need to rejoin the genealogist search site as I found them useful for other non-conformist records for my hunsband.

This is probably not a lot of use but worth reading in case it applies.

I have the entry for Thomas Marsh 1793 on the national archives non-conformist registers site.   The info from the Victoria County history link was really useful - so thank you to both researchers and I will now close this look up request.
