Bessie McLaughlin, Limavady to Philadelphia, PA
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 18:24 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace my g grandmother Bessie(Elizabeth) McLaughlin nee O'Kane. She was born 6.4.1862 in Limavady,Co Derry N Ireland. Married 1881 Widowed 1887-husband Daniel. She had 4 children and emigrated to Philadelphia between 1888 and 1907 alone we think. Two sons followed about 1907-Daniel b.1882 and John b.1884 Limavady. Her other 2 children stayed in Ireland.  I have found John in the Ellis Is site going to a cousin J Doherty of 2343 So 11th St, Phil,PA. I have a record of John marrying Julia Fegan 26.4.1916 in Annunciation BVM Church, 1511 S 10th St, Phil,PA. Haven't been able trace Bessie or get any more info on her sons.
We've been told that Bessie ended her days in a "home for gentlewomen" in Philadelphia.
I have been searching for Bessie for many years now and would appreciate any help you can offer.

Here's a possible match -

1920 Census, Philadelphia, PA, 2138 South Garnett Street

McLaughlin, John, head, rents home, male, white, age 34, married, immigrated 1907, papers filed for naturalization, b. Ireland, parents b. Ireland, occupation - ship fitter in ship yard

wife Julia, female, white, age 36, married, immigrated 1903, alien, b. Ireland, parents b. Ireland, no occupation

If you could post the details of the ship John traveled on and his date of arrival, that would be helpful, as I can't seem to find it.  I found a declaration of intention and petition for naturalization for a John McLaughlin born 20 Oct. 1885 in Derry, Ireland who had a wife named Julia, but there is a marriage date of 7 Sep. 1917 in Philadelphia given.

Details of ship for John McLaughlin:

First Name: John
Last Name: McLaughlin
Ethnicity: British Irish
Last Place of Residence: Derry, Ireland
Date of Arrival: Nov 19, 1907
Age at Arrival:  23y    Gender:  M    Marital Status:  S
Ship of Travel: California
Port of Departure: Londonderry
Manifest Line Number: 0013

Johns' birth date was 30th March 1884. His brother, Daniel's birth date was 6th June 1882. I think I have found Daniel on the Ellis Is site, too on The California. Arrival date May 18, 1908. age 24. single. He is listed as residing in Phila,PA and states that he originally emigrated in 1907.
Details of John & Julia's marriage. ( Julia baptised St Eugene's Cathedral, Derry City,Co Derry, Jan 1879.) Witnesses to marriage: Patrick McConnell & Sarah Downey Married by Fr Thomas Hurton/Huston.date looks like April 26th.

The naturalization papers have the same arrival date of 19 Nov. 1907 on the California, so it's odd that you have a different birth date and marriage date for him.  The petition for naturalization also says that wife Julia was born 3 Jan. 1884 in Ireland.

He is listed as John Joseph McLaughlin on some of the papers, in case that helps.  His declaration of intention is a bit fuzzy on Ancestry, but it looks like Limavady was his place of birth and last foreign residence.  If someone else has access to it elsewhere (it seems to be on footnote.com, but I'm not sure if they use the same scans as Ancestry), they can double check.

Hello
I have checked the passenger record for John again and I'm sure it is him. All the info tallies with our family. He is recorded as coming from his father Dan McLaughlin. His father was deceased at th is time -he was Dan.   The info about his marriage year, 1916, I was given by a genealogist in Derry City-he said Julia had to apply to Derry, where she was born, for her baptismal cert and that the wedding took place in April 26 1916.
There's also a record for his brother Dan on the Ellis Is site. He is arriving May 18,1908 and gives his place of residence as Phila,PA.
Sorry if this is too much info-and Thanks so much for your help.

There's an index to Philadelphia marriages here:  http://labs.familysearch.org/  There are a number of John McLaughlins in there, so if you have Julia's maiden name, you might want to try looking under her name.
