I'm thinking of paying a visit to Motherwell Heritage Centre. Can anyone tell me would I be able to obtain photocopies of 1841-1901 Census's and, if so, how much would it cost?

Hi Cansip,

They have the Lanarkshire Census records on microfilm at the Heritage centre and can print it off, I'm not quite sure of the cost but I don't think it is more than £1.
The census are also available online at Scotlands People although you still have to buy credits to view them, Other places where they can be viewed and printed is The lanarkshire family History Society Centre in Windmillhill Street, Its open on a Weds &  Sat from 1pm - 3pm, Thurs evenings 7pm - 9pm.
And also at The Mitchel Library in Glasgow (While your there why not have a nosey at the Lanark Poor law Applications you may find some of your relations had applied for this and the records can give some good information)

Cansip,

Just noticed from your profile your from West Lothian, It may be easier and cheaper for you to view the census at the Scotlands People centre in Edinburgh. £10 gets you a seat for the day and access to all the records including the ones that show no image on the website. Prints cost 50p and its amazing how much information and records you can get through in a day.

Hello Gerry,

I went through to Motherwell this morning. As you say they have the Census Records on microfilm, much of it indexed on CD or fiche, 25p a print. I started off using Scotlands People online a few months ago but it's a bit pricey. I've been through to the SP centre in Edinburgh a few times and was getting some more info through census's from Motherwell before my next visit. Thanks for the extra info anyway  Smiley
