Birth Records In British India
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 12:56 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,

A Henry George Hamilton b1838 Dec was born at sea in the Bay of Calcutta. His birth was registered in 1839 in St James Calcutta, how do I go about getting a copy of his birth certificate.

Also his dad is called William and mum is called Caroline but I have no idea what year they were both born in or what year they married can anybody help me and point me in the right direction to go from here.

Thanks for any help Smiley

I know this, because it was on Heir Hunters yesterday.  The BMD details of India up to 1857 are stored in the British Library in London.

Hamali - census records for 1861/71/81/91 are on A*. if you don't have access please ask. seems to have been married twice to Catherine (1861c) and Mary (1871c - )

Thanks for all info.
Yes I have that  Henry George Hamilton was married twice I have the marriage certificate and on there it says under William Hamilton father that he is deceased.

And I went back in the 1841 census looking for a William Hamilton but cant find him or Caroline, so I was thinking that they might of stayed in Calcutta for a while as Henry was born in 1838.

If that is the right married for William Hamilton does it say who his father was and where can I go to get that info.

Thanks once again

you can not get certificate for marriage of William & Caroline as before 1837 when civil registration began. could possibly post on middlesex(?London) board and see if anyone has local records, but a lot of time no more info given.
came to same conclusion about them in india as can't find them on census.

Henry george 2 marriages you can get certs from:

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Henry george Hamilton = Catherine Elizabeth poole  Dec 1859 Whitechapel 1c /791

Henry george Hamilton = Mary Payne  dec 1865 Clerkenwell 1b / 1096

was interested in fact William was a groom / valet at Hampton Court. that could be Hampton Court palace??

working for royalty??  be interesting to know why he went to India - did he go with family he was working for???
Not sure how to find out. had a quick look on national archives but will have a think while away this weekend.

A* has one record for a William hamilton born 1810 - 1820 in london (which we are only guessing):

William Hamilton b.28/2/1815 chr.3/12/1815 Westminster,london  to William & Mary

Could be him but need confirmation as you say from marriage cert or census (birth date/place)

Hi there,

Yes it sounds like he was working a Hampton Court but who knows why he went to sea with a wife that gave birth also on the ship.

I did find out that a William Hamilton was bankrupt in 1829 in London don't know if this is the same person as it say formerly from Calcutta, so might be concected.

Thanks Alison
