I'm working on restoration of this pic for a relative (it's a work in progress, and she's given me the okay to post it), and we're wondering if anyone can guesstimate when it might have been taken?  We know it was probably taken in Sydney ... any opinions, also, on how old the lad would have been at the time?

Sorry, China, - that's pretty much all I've got, just a scan at 600dpi, and all I've done is trim back and repair the torn corners, plus start to clean it up  Undecided

Could you ask the relative if she scanned it in colour, or in black & white? It makes a big difference.

Could you also ask if there is any design on the back?

All I can say from this much is post 1888.

That hat looks odd, almost a bowler but low crowned and with a narrow, straightish brim.  Haven't seen many looking like that in post 1900 photos Undecided

Into the 1890's but by how much I wouldn't like to say.He looks no more than about 15-16.
The back may reveal more.

K ... I've spoken with the rellie who sent me the pic ... apparently there was nothing whatsoever on the back of the photo ... it was actually scanned in colour - d'oh, I should have remembered that, I was the one who converted it b&w!  Embarrassed

The original was very yellowed sepia.

Okay, sepia with nothing on the back...so I'd go along with Jim's estimate of 1890s, maayyybe up to about 1900, but more than that you'd be very hard-pressed to get Smiley

Thanks heaps, China.  He was born 1882, ... so 1890-1900 would put him somewhere between 8 and 18.  If this was taken around, say, 1895, he would have been about 13.  Works for me - will mark the thread completed Grin
