Thanks to both of you.
Sorry Nanny Jan, when you suggested the birth cert yesterday, it didn't dawn on me that it is the relationship to the head of the household and therefore stepson to James Lawrence until Ricky pointed it out.
Also George's death would have been bewteen 1851 and 1857 when Sarah remarried, so that helps narrow down the years a little and I imagine there was some gap between one husband and another.

Hi Nanny Jan and Ricky

An update:

Just received William's birth certificate and his parents were George Lawrence and Sarah Allison.  They were living at 21 Rochester Row at the time of the birth. I have also found their marriage in 1843 in Westminster, London so very pleased with the result, though cannot find out what happened to George as no deaths show up before her remarriage to James Lawrence in 1857. Was he George's brother??   Will probably go for their marriage cert next to get any idea of who their fathers were.
Shall keep on looking, if you come across anything, I would appreciate it.

Hi

Well  I received the marriage cert for George and Sararh ALLISON. He was a Colourmann who lived at Tothill Street and Sarah was resident at Great Smith? Street. Unfortunately both fathers are missing so highly likely they were both illigetimate, which isn't too helpful. So bit of a dead end here!!
