Wiakaraka Cemetery in Onehunga - Photo Request - Completed
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 09:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I wonder if there is anyone willing to take some photo's for me? I have no idea if there are any headstones for these plots as no one from my family has ever been to New Zealand.  They are of my Great Grandparents and their son Andrew.

Donnachie, Andrew Miller
25-12-1937: aged 22
Location: Area 3, Block X1, Lot No 77A

Donnachie, Kate
03-11-1915: aged 44
Location: Area 3, Block 11, Lot No 77

Donnachie, Matthew
01-09-1949: aged 76
Location, Area 3, Block 11, Lot No 77B.

My Great Grandfather did marry again but I have no idea if his last wife is buried in this area, if there is another Donnachie there I would love to know.

Many Thanks
Mary

Hello Mary   Smiley

Sorry, not able to help with the photos (I'm not in that area), but just answering your question re:  Matthew's second marriage.

The NZ Marriage Index has the following record :

Matthew DONNACHIE - Elizabeth J. HOEY - year 1924
                                 --------------------

AND  ...  also buried at Waikaraka Cemetery >>

DONNACHIE - Elizabeth Jane
died 7 December 1954 - aged 70 years

Area 3   Block 11   Lot No. 77

(Which seems to be the same Plot as Kate DONNACHIE ??)

You can view the cemetery database, at the following link.

Thank you Lu

I wonder why Elizabeth is buried in the same plot  Huh
This would have been my Great Grandfathers third marriage, his first wife died in Scotland and he later married my Great Grandmother Catherine. They came out to New Zealand c1910/11, she died shortly after giving birth to Andrew.  Sad

Hi again Mary

Yes, I wondered too.   Cheesy

I know of instances where a first and second wife, are buried in plots, either side of their husband, but two wives, together  Huh

Unless of course Catherine (Kate) and Elizabeth... were related in some way ?    (Does that seem like a possibility to you ?)

And such a sad story, Catherine dying shortly after her son's birth.    Cry

Hi Mary

I just came across this (which seems could be the same Elizabeth Jane ?)

Divorce File at Archives New Zealand (Auckland) :

HOEY - Henry Gibson v. HOEY - Elizabeth Jane - 1922

[From NZ Marriage Index :
   Henry Gibson HOEY - Elizabeth Jane RITCHIE - m. 1919 ]

Can't see an "Elizabeth Jane RITCHIE" birth in NZ circa 1884
(though there is an Elizabeth RITCHIE b. 1885).

Hi Lu

Thanks again for the info Smiley just got it as I was typing this  Grin

No I don't think they were related, there was only two relations of Catherine's in New Zealand and they died in the 1920's I think.
They didn't have any children themselves but brought up Andrew after his Mother died. His brother (my Grandfather) and sister were taken back to Scotland by Catherine's sister, shortly after she died.

Hi Mary,

If you don't mind waiting a little longer, I will try and get the photos for you next time I go that way. I had it in mind but knew I wasn't able to do it for a while, now your request has been shifted to complete so thought I'd respond to say I've copied your info and always have my camera with me. If someone else beats me to it then I'll get the notification.

Thank you for the offer Mare but, someone has already been and sadly  Cry there are no headstones for my Great Grandparents, there son or his last wife. I have also noticed that my Grandfather's last wife's son had his ashes scattered on the same plot, but it's completely bare. Very sad.
Regards Mary.
ps. sorry, I should have put that koha kindly took them.

Understand, I have that situation frequently with my lot too sadly.
I have spent a bit of time there looking for others, unfortunately there are a lot of plots unmarked or with broken headstones but probably no more than other cemeteries of a similar age and overall the grounds are very well looked after. Pleased though that koha took a look for you already ... thought perhaps it hadn't been done...
