Dear Members,
In 1838 I found that Joseph MITCHELL, Master, RN, was at Exmouth Terrace, Kent.
But by the 1841 UK Census he was aboard the HMS Crane leaving his family in Kent.
So, would it be possible to find Elizabeth MITCHELL, his wife & her 3 kids at this address. The three kids are :-
Henry b.1829 Gillingham
Charles b.1833
Elizabeth Agnes b.1835
PB. Their 4th child.....Helen Maria Mitchell..........was born at Falmouth, Cornwall, so maybe they were there for the 1841 Census

Hello Steve,
I've looked through the whole of Exmouth Terrace schedule on FMP, and the only Mitchell family I could find there were -
HO107 458 Folio 1/56 Page 15
MIITCHELL, William 67 Occupation – Navy P Not born in county
MITCHELL, Martha 45 ditto
MITCHELL, Margaret 19 ditto
MITCHELL, James 11 born Kent
TAYLOR, Elizabeth 25 Not born in county
TAYLOR, James 3 born Kent
There may still be a link - William Mitchell is shown as a Navy P (which might mean Navy Pensioner), and could be related.

I think this could well be them (in Falmouth, Cornwall where next known child was born):
1841 - Bar, Falmouth, Cornwall
Elizabeth MICHELL 30 b.Cornwall
Charles 7 b.Cornwall
Agnes 6 b.Cornwall
Jane ROW 20 b.Cornwall
HO107/154 book 5 folio 30 page 3
Although the birthplaces for all are "Y" ie. yes for born in county of residence (Cornwall), the ages for all are correct.

Yes, I know what you mean but it would be rather a co-incidence if it wasn't them don't you think - one sees so many mistakes on the census - I wonder if Henry was away at school or staying with relatives somewhere? Do you have any information from the Falmouth parish registers for any baptisms of children there? If not, it might be a good idea to post a lookup on the Cornwall lookup requests board - there might be something useful there.
