Hmmm...there are a few different Arthur CLEWES born in about 1874 - do you know where he was from at all or any other information that might help pinpoint him?

Hi and welcome to rootschat
Sorry to amend your first post but we take care not to mention names of living people on our boards.  If anyone can help can you please reply to Gaynor by personal message if it involves recent dates.   It should be possible to find him in the 1901 census though.  Any idea of his birth place or who he married?

unfortunatly all i have is his birth certificate that says he died on 19th aug 1952 age 78 ..howevever as his son (w.clewes )was present at death im inclined to think that it was his house and not arthurs ..i do believe w.clewes had another son called arthur who got married to annie hamilton and at some point moved to hanley stoke....other than that im stumped!!

You'd need to find out more about the son then if possible - maybe get the marriage certificate and see how old he is so you can send for a birth certficate and hopefully put a name to his mum (Arthur Snr's wife).  This might then help you find out more about Arthur from his marriage certificate.

It's really difficult with nothing to seach on unfortunately.

If you look on www.freebmd.org.uk there is a marriage for Arthur Clewes to Annie Hamilton in 1917 in Stoke on Trent.

You would have to buy the certificate to get further details.  If you search on the same site for births of Clewes with mother's name Hamilton there are several including one begining with W.    These are in the 1920s and 30s though so I hope you are right that they are all deceased.
