question about using overlay in Photshop
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 18:01 UTC (UK) »

When giving colour to a B&W photo I have noticed that dark grey "noise" does not take the colour at all and the result gives a "dirty" appearance. If i use a straight colour I lose the shading and texture. Anyone have this problem and how do I solve it? example attached shows the dark spots that make the yellow look "dirty".

Thanks

Have you tried increasing the opacity? or increasing the saturation?

Have you tried using "colour" instead of "overlay"?  I prefer that myself.

Have you tried re-moving the noise? Photoshop comes with a filter to remove noise.

Elements does not have a noise remover just a despeckle but that does'nt do it either. I can't find "colour" as opposed to overlay.

Colour is right at the bottom of the list.  Below overlay.

When I want to add colour to old photos (esp. a sepia tone for example), I desaturate & then Image => Adjust => Colour Balance.

With that Colour Balance tool window that opens, play around with the 3 Colour Balance sliders in combination with the Tone Balance radio buttons & see how you go.

After colouring why don’t you use the clone stamp? I’ve done that sometimes when I’m not happy with the finish.
