Fisher Family of St Leonard's
« on: Monday 06 July 09 14:49 UTC (UK) »

Hello all,

I have discoverd that my gt gt gt grandfather, Robert James Fisher, was living at Osborne Cottage, Caves Road in St Leonard's on the 1911 census. From his war papers (regiment number 5626) I have found him living there up until 1918 with his second wife, Agnes Lottie Godden. Robert James was born in 1853 in Wrentham, Suffolk.

He served in Ireland suring the 1870-1880's and after his first wife Emma died aged 28 in Kent, he marries Agnes and they have a number of children. I am wondering if....

a) Baptisms for the children can be found in St Leonard's.

b) If any recrd of Robert's burial can be obtained

c) Whether there may be any mention of him in the local papers. He later became a golf caddie.

Robert and Agnes had he following children, accoding to the various census' :

Stephen c1890, Elsie c1893, John c1895, Agnes c1896, Dorothy c1899 (died 1902), Edward c1901, Albert c1903, Reginald c1905 and Daisy c1908. It would be fantastic to here from anybody with some information on this family as I have tried ancestry and nothng solid seems to come up. I am hoping somebody in the area will be able to tell mea bit more. Any help welcomed and appreciated.

Thankyou for reading this post,

Hi Liz, thanks for these! That's brilliant Smiley

When I said I could not find anything I meant for the death/burial of Robert and his wife Agnes. I am now going through the bmd indexes (slowly but surely) s I can only hope something turns up, but I remember checking a while back and found nothing...maybe I made a mistake and will find it this time!

Thanks for all of the birth and marriage references they seem to be correct Cheesy

I agree looking for his or Agnes's death will be a slow process, he might have lived to the 1940's or so might'nt he? So lots of quarters to plough through, but worth it if you find it!

Can you help yourself by narrowing it down at all by seeing if he is ever reffered to as 'deceased' on a child's marriage cert?

I could yes and I have three marriages to investigate, when my financial situation is better I will order them Smiley

I descend from the daughter of Robert's first mariage and she married in 1903...that is no use because I know he was alive of course he remarried and went on to serve in the First World War albeit on the Home Front.

I will see what the indexes throw up. Thanks for all of your help liz Smiley It is appreciated!

A rootschatter has just kindly PM'd me to say he has found the death of Robert James Fisher. He died in Hastings in March Qtr of 1947, aged 93! Maybe now I can see if he had a will or is mentioned in any local papers.

Regards, thanks again to all helping on this family Smiley
