charles h Leigh on 1881 census b. Heyrod, Lancs. shown as grandson of William Willoughby Leigh( b. Blackrod, Lancs in abt. 1813)   Can anyone help me in finding out the parents of Charles Henry? Would be very grateful for any help!

It's always helpful if you could post full details of any census you find your ancestors on as it helps with earlier/later searches

This family were living in Stalybridge Cheshire in 1881

William Willoughby Leigh 68  b Blackrod labourer in print works
Ann   59  b Blackrod

I can't find him on the 1871 but this is his grandparents marriage which we can use to check earlier censuses

Found them in 1871 in Stalybridge indexed as Lee.  All children from Mary Jane onwards are shown as b Heywood  Heyrod Lancs

Mary Jane 18 
John William 14 
Elizabeth   12 
Julia Ann 8 
Charles Henry 9  shown as son
RG10 Piece 4092 Folio 34 Page 9

The ages of the children above preclude them being the parent of Charles so I need to go back further to see if there are any other older children

The fact that he is with grandparents on 2 censuses could possibly mean he was the illegitimate son of one of the daughters

Dear Carole(alias Night-Owl like me) I think the address may read Heyrod not Heywood as this is an area quite close to me and confused me on the census when Wm. willoughby address is given  as Blackrod ( I am not thinking Blackrod is incorrect just a coincidence that it sounds so likeHeyrod)             
       
Why do you think he is shown as born in Ashton on this census when he was previously shown as born in Blackrod?     Confused and not learning-- Beryl

I lost my internet connection last night just as I was trying to find them on the 1851 census.

Re: 1871 details - sorry - I mis-read the image and it is Heyrod and not Heywood so I have amended my post above

Birthplaces can change - it depends who gave the info to the enumerator and how well they knew the person.  As they were living in Ashton at that time - assumptions may have been made

I'll see if I can find them in 1851

Parts of the 1851 census were water damaged during storage but some have been restored.  This entry is from the unfilmed 1851 - no ages shown

1841 for Bolton Le Moors - ages in 1841 from 16yrs onwards were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs
