Workhouse- Toxteth Park
« on: Wednesday 06 May 09 18:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I have a death certificate of a James Miller 1879. He was 32 years old, and died from bronchitis.

The address for him was the Workhouse, although his wife was present, her address was Combermere Street.

My question is: did the workhouse serve as a hospital then. Why would he be in the workhouse when he had a home with his wife  Huh

Did they have children at home
maybe if it was the family home they got the poor chap
who probably be in a lot of pain out of the home
not very pleasent for kids to hear their father in such a poor state
and the workhouse as you suggest maybe was a hospice of sorts

Hi
What was the address of the workhouse ?
I have received a death cert for my relative and they died in a workhouse in 1936, Wesham, Blackpool way. He had a child who was sent into care because of the poor Law.
I wonder if it was the same place ?

There was an infirmary attached to the Workhouse in Toxteth Park.  My GG Grandfather's death certificate states that he died in the Workhouse Infirmary in 1915, of valvular disease of heart, aortic. He was living in South Hill Road, when he was admitted as a patient.

I think that the Workhouse and Infirmary became Sefton General Hospital, and is now the Asda superstore.  Hope this helps.

glitter2009,

I will be paying a visit to the records office in Liverpool on Tuesday afternoon, is there a specific question that you would like me to ask the staff there?
