Waitakere, North Shore & Rodney history online

Hi there,

didn't see this in the resource section, and came across it in the library

About this site
About our area

Rodney, Waitakere and North Shore Libraries (known collectively as ROWANS) are based in the northern part of the Auckland region, and together they serve an area that extends from the harbour side suburbs of Northcote and West Harbour, up the dramatic western coastline of Karekare and Piha to the southern end of New Zealand’s largest harbour, the Kaipara. On the east coast, it extends from Devonport and the beaches of East Coast Bays and the Hibiscus Coast to just south of the Mangawhau Harbour. The region encompasses city, marae, small town and rural communities, a navy and two air force bases, light industry, fishing, winemaking, farming and forestry, the Waitakere Ranges and the marine reserves of Leigh and Long Bay, new Auckland suburbs and historic settlements. Between them, the three library systems serve the communities of a diverse, growing region.
Project background

Community libraries have an important role in collecting, preserving and promoting the local history of their areas for the benefit of the people they serve. North Shore and Waitakere City Libraries already had existing local history electronic indexes and digitised photographs that needed an online home. Rodney Library aims to index its own local papers, and in the future plans to develop a digital collection.

In 2006, the three libraries joined together and as ROWANS, established a joint project with Datacom (NZ) to make their local history photographs and indexes available online. Greenstone open-source digital library software was chosen because of its flexibility and ease of use. In late 2006 DL Consulting, who develop for and contribute to Greenstone, were contracted to develop the back-end database, data entry module and the public user screens for this site in conjunction with the ROWANS-Datacom Project Team.

Local History Online brings together for the first time the digital and electronic local history collections of North Shore, Rodney and Waitakere Libraries.
