ROBINSON/CATHERALL Denholme
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 06:04 UTC (UK) »

I am new to rootschat so I hope I'm doing this right.
I am looking for information regarding Benjamin ROBINSON b:Denholme and wife Annice CATHERALL b:Ovenden and their parents.  I have census records from 1871 and 1881 however, the is no information about their parents except for Annice who's mother I believe is Martha Foster.

Also does anyone know who Thomas RUSHWORTH is?  He is listed as a visitor in their home on the 1871 census.

This is a very broad question.   I keep finding the same surnames together, does anyone know the connections between the ROBINSON's, RUSHWORTH's, FOSTER's, and PEARSON's.  They all lived in the Denholme Gate area and near or on Garth Row, Denholme Clough, and Black Edge Lane.

Benjamin and Thomas were Primitive Methodist Ministers.  Where would that have been?

I know this is a lot to ask so if anyone can help with any information I would be so very grateful!

Hi Jenn377 and welcome to rootschat... Grin

You're doing just fine with your post. One thing that would be helpful is to add some dates- eg when born.

Maybe it would be wise to tell us more about Thomas RUSHWORTH as he appears in 1871 census- how old was he then? where was he born? was he married or a widower? what was his occupation?   With this info maybe someone will find they can place him or suggest to you where to go next.

As you are wanting to know the names of the fathers of Ben ROBINSON and Annice CATHERALL, provided they married after 1837, you could buy their marriage cert and this would be on it.   You can search freebmd to find when they were married and the reference number you need for ordering.

get bacvk to us with some dates etc Cheesy

Hi Jenn, welcome from me too.

At first I thought Thomas Rushworth might not be related at all - just another preacher visiting - but tracing Annice Catherall back, it seems that he was a relation - maybe her uncle?

(I notice there are lots of Rushworths and Robinsons on the same census page!)

Apparently Jonathan and Martha were married in 1848 (Jun 1848 Bradford 23 172 Martha Catherall to possibly Jonathan Foster) - they're on the 1851 census together but Annice isn't with them. Hopefully we'll find her staying with family ...

The IGI has this extracted christening:
Annice Catterall
Birth 29 March 1845
Christening 16 March 1862 St John, Preston, Lancashire
Parents Thomas Catterall and Martha

I'm discounting this christening because her age seems too much out and it doesn't seem to fit with the rest.

Jonathan Catherall, head, 56, Wool Comber, b. Ovenden

Annis, dau, 10, Worsted Spinner, b. do.
Thomas Rushworth, son in law (=stepson), 14, Worsted Spinner, b. do.

I wonder if it's a mistake and Annis should be granddaughter instead of daughter?

Jenn hi and welcome,
Can I ask about your Pearsons, I have some from Thornton. I also have Rushworths from Haworth but not your Thomas.
Your research seems to be sound and I like the way you have presented the facts. Let me add the following which you may already know.
Ovenden comes under Halifax for census returns.
Haworth is under Bradford
Thornton and Denholme could be either Halifax or Bradford - GENUKI has all the dates and details.
Your ancestors have landed themselves smack in the middle of the 'dissenter' belt and there are scores of chapels where they might have preached, fortunately the names of the preachers have in many cases been preserved better than their chapels, graveyards and flocks
You might like to try Bradford or Calderdale Family History Societies for further information.

Hi guys,
Thank you for all your responces!
Rootschat is such an exciting resource.
I'm excited and I think I got ahead of myself with too many questions the first time around.

My first (but not last) Smiley  place of interest is to find more info. on the parents of
Benjamin ROBINSON and his wife Annice CATHERALL

Benjamin ROBINSON
b:May 8 1840 or 1842
Denholme, Thornton
Weaver, Primitive Methodist Minister

I might have found his parents but I'm REALLY not sure if this is them
Thomas ROBINSON b:abt 1801 Thornton
Hannah PEARSON b:abt 1800  Thornton
They lived on Blace Edge Ln in 1951 and 1961
(Dave, this is were the name Pearson might come into my family)

Annice CATHERALL
b:Jan 16 1843
Ovenden or Thornton
Weavers Wife

They were married on Aug 11 1863
They lived on Garth Row in 1871
They lived at 46 Woodbury Rd. in 1881

I have solid info on them from 1881 to the present.
So any new information would be wonderful.

Regarding the surname RUSHWORTH I'm trying to figure out the connection between the two families  ROBINSON AND RUSHWORTH.   I think they were family friends but how? I'll will tackle that later.

Thank you again,
Jen from Denver Colorado USA

My guess from above findings is that Annice is the (illegitimate) daughter of Martha Catherall and granddaughter of Jonathan Catherall. As there seem to be several possible families for Benjamin, I think it would be necessary to get hold of the marriage details for Annice and Benjamin to check Benjamin's father's details:

Sep 1863 Bradford Yk  9b 75
Annice Catterrall - Benjamin Robinson

Hi Tati,

How do I get a copy of a marriage certificate for
Annice Catterrall-Benjamin Robinson  Sep.1863 Bradford Yk 9b 75.

Could Annice and her sister Mary be children from a previous marriage?
Thank you,
Jen

Hi Jen
go to this site.
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates
You will need to register and the certificates cost £7 (UK)
There is a box which asks 'do you have the GRO reference' - that will be volume 9b page 75

Annice's surname is Catterrall / Catherall. If necessary you could check that by applying for her Birth certificate. If there is a father's name on there you will have the answer, if not it is a fair assumption that she was illegitimate.
If you get the marriage certificate then that too should have the father's name plus occupation, for both the bride and the groom's fathers. But be aware that the information will have been supplied by the bride and groom themselves and may reflect whatever they were told, this is particularly relevant if the parents are deceased.

Thanks Dave.
I will stat work on their marriage certificate.
When it comes to Annice CATHERALL's birth records I'm having a difficult time finding any.  Could this also have to do with the possibility of her birth being illegitimate?  I have looked on ukbmd.org.uk.  Would you suggest somewhere else.
Thank you again for your help.

Re: Annice Catherall,  after talking to my Great Aunt who is 97 years old said she believes Annice was adopted.  That might explain some of the difficulty I have had trying to find her birth records.  I wonder if they have adoption records that far back.  Maybe in church records?

Hi Jen,

The registration of births wasn't compulsory back in the 1840s but I can see a possible birth (the first name isn't 100% clear on the image but I agree with FreeBMD that it's probably Annas)

Mar 1842
Annas Catherall - Halifax XXII 246

Hi Jen,
I'm not sure if you have found all your answers yet. If you have ignore this posting.
Just re-read one of your postings in which you say that Annice may have been adopted. Well yes, looking at the 1861 census her mother Martha Catherall is re married to Johnathan Foster OR had at least 3 children before her marriage either way Jonathan is 'adopting' Martha's children.

The birth on BMD  posted by Tati
Mar 1842
Annas Catherall - Halifax 22  246
Looks to me to be the correct one.

Hi
I've sent for the marriage certificate for Benjamin and Annice!  Can't wait.
Is it possible to get a copy of the birth certificate of Annice (Annas) Catherall -Halifax XXII 246 from the gro.gov. web site?  Also when I looked on the BMD site it had the page listed as both 2246 and 246.  Which should I use?
Thanks
Jen
