I’m thinking this is to do with the Navy. Even the building looks like a part of the barracks.
There's a big Navy base in Plymouth.

Interesting about the moustaches because of that I think I’ll have to go with the Marines. I bet if you post the picture on the Armed Forces site someone will be able to help. I bet there even tell you what make the rifles are.
I see the address is Union St. Quite a famous part of Plymouth for its clubs and girls of the night.

Yep... right now just a minute?!?!? My Grt grandad was in the RM at Devon Stonehouse?? but he died in 1895 so before your time... shame... anyway I have all his attestation papers ... very interestin..
Now My wonderful Poppa is alive and kicking and spent nearly all his early career in the Royal Navy both UK and Australia...Sporting a moustache? now I will ask him later how he managed to get away with it... He has told me before... something about special permission...... so we will see..

The rifles were the old original short magazine Lee-Enfields and with the bayonets fixed are used for 'Bayonet Fencing' which used to be practised regularly throughout the armed services. My immediate thoughts when I saw the picture were of the old Army Physical Training Instructors who used to provide Demonstration Teams regularly at Tattoos and occasionally at the Rememberance Serice in the Albert Hall, but their guernseys as I remember them were black and red alternate bands. Cheers, George.

Dad has arisen from his hammock... and says No he didnt have a moustache... definately not allowed.. an if you had a beard it had to be inspected at intervals to keep it in check?!?!?
