Hmmm ... I see boxing gloves ... a soccer ball ... those tenpin thingies they used to use for calisthenics exercises ... and a pair of rifles ...

Sports team ? ... Plymouth Young Sportsmen's Club? (I'm guessing, obviously!)

I’m thinking this is to do with the Navy. Even the building looks like a part of the barracks.

There's a big Navy base in Plymouth.

I think you are on the right track xinia ... I was a bootneck at Stonehouse Barracks in 1944 and the background of this much earlier (thank goodness) photo is strikingly similar ..... but the again most of the buildings in that location were made of stone.
I hope that they were Marines (er bootnecks).

You too are on the right track I think.
One clue though is that the navy do not allow moustaches (only a 'full set' (a beard) is permitted ... and there is one bloke there (an instructor?) who has a moustache which the Royal Marines were allowed to have.
Just a guess.

Interesting about the moustaches because of that I think I’ll have to go with the Marines. I bet if you post the picture on the Armed Forces site someone will be able to help. I bet there even tell you what make the rifles are.

I see the address is Union St. Quite a famous part of Plymouth for its clubs and girls of the night.   Smiley

You could be right xinia ....... the rules might have changed since I was demobbed 1947.
I often smile to myself when I see American films which depict a British naval officer with a moustache ... often happened in 'MASH'.

The rifles were the old original short magazine Lee-Enfields and with the bayonets fixed are used for 'Bayonet Fencing' which used to be practised regularly throughout the armed services.
My immediate thoughts when I saw the picture were of the old Army Physical Training Instructors who used to provide Demonstration Teams regularly at Tattoos and occasionally at the Rememberance Serice in the Albert Hall, but their guernseys as I remember them were black and red alternate bands.
Cheers,
George.

Dad has arisen from his hammock... and says No he didnt have a moustache... definately not allowed.. an if you had a beard it had to be inspected at intervals to keep it in check?!?!?

People have said it in a variety of ways already, but my guess is a Navy (or possibly Marines) exhibition drill team.
